I need a recommendation for getting 7.1 speakers for PC gaming. I'd like to keep the price under $500.
Any suggestions ?

There are no 7.1 computer speakers. You're going to have to get a home theater setup. In which case, you better spend $500+ if you don't want something subpar.

Or you can just get 5.1 system and then get stereo speakers.

I recommend Logitech. They make good speakers.

I'll keep that in mind. My "old" Klipsch 5.1 system is still working, so for now I'm going to just sit tight.
Despite having heard how great the onboard audio is on my mobo (Asus P9X79 w/ Realtek), I did notice a big improvement
after I installed an Asus Xonar DX audio card -- lots of little clicks and whirs &other background sound effects (I guess that's the EAX kicking in ?).
Either that, or defects in my speakers are now audible

Logitech products are good but they often have critical issues. From my experience... I was having problems with my brand new Logitech Z5500 speaker. I switched the wall socket on and there was no power coming through the control center. I had tried a different power lead but to no avail. So, I decided to say bye bye to it.

The Creative ZiiSound T6 2.1 speaker is recommended. It's working just fine for me..
