Ok, basically, im going to make this as short as possible. Im doing a project for my computer engineering class. We are having a AMD VS Intel debate(i'm on the Intel team). I found an article about socket AM3, and found a section where it says exactly this: "Jetway for example, prepare universal Socket AM2+ mainboards equipped with DDR2 and DDR3 memory slots at the same time. These mainboards with a Socket AM3 processor installed will allow using either memory type."

My question is: Does that mean that the production costs increase? if yes, then that means i can use that as an argument against them :D .

I just need someone to confirm this for me. I figured it WOULD increase production costs, using my common sense, but you can never be too sure.

BTW, need this for tommorow.

If they have different slots for the DDR2 and DDR3 then there would be an increase in production costs, but I don't think they would be appreciable, maybe a couple bucks per motherboard. The main cost would be in the design of the board and supporting chipset.

Allright, thanks! :D Thought so. I only assumed material costs would go up because of this.

Yeah a bit. Also, historically, DDR2/DDR3 combo boards have performed and overclocked poorly. In 90% of cases, hybrids suck. Is this an official debate or a casual one? If you have to take sides, so be it. Otherwise, taking sides in the first place is the wrong choice.

AWESOME, thanks so much! Glad you could give me that info! Also, if by official you mean serious, then yes, i guess you could call it an official debate. Our teacher gave us an outline about it, its a project. Also, this has been KILLING ME: I need to find a good source of information when it comes to power consumption, temperature comparison, and Hyperthreading performance of the Phenom and Nehalem chips. Everything i end up finding on the net is just a bunch of words, no charts, nothing i can visually relate to, nothing those words can relate to :? . If you guys could get me some good sources, that would be awesome. Also, found some nice graphics benchmark info, problem is i couldnt print it out. Well, i could have, but didnt want to because i dont have color cartridges in my printer, and it just wouldnt look as nice. Im hoping my teacher will let me open up the link on the projector on his computer  .

AMD does not hyperthread.

At this moment in time, Intel seems to be winning.

Be careful with this argument .. it doesn't help you at all.

a) There are also Intel boards that support both DDR2 and DDR3
b) Intel and AMD produce chipsets. The increase in cost to which you are referring is borne by the motherboard manufacturer.

You're much better off simply doing a price/performance analysis.

Or, you can take the third (and only intelligent) position in the debate and say that the choice between Intel and AMD depends entirely on the buyer and his needs. The market will negatively affected if either company stops producing consumer x86 CPUs.

For sure, however, if the opposition in the debate does bring up the point he described, it ought to be very easy to discredit.
