Will current computers be upgradable to the Intel Light Peak technology?

There will likely be PCIe addon cards. LightPeak is likely going to be extremely expensive though.

Even if there's an add-on card, Lightpeak comes out of the gate at 10 Gbit/s. A 32-lane PCIe 2.0 slot pulls 16 GB/s. That's all well and good for folks with 3+ PCie 2.0/2.1 slots and filled with 2 video cards, but what about those that don't have an x58 currently? To pull full usage of Lightpeak, we'll need a dedicated chip and port onboard like we do with dual GigLan, or more slots that are capable.

I just really hope they integrate the technology into a new chipset for X58. I really don't want to wait for the X58 replacement later on.

Light Peak should be called Thunderbolt for now. There is no light, no fiber wiring of the home, and it's still capable. It's not up to the chipset to integrate this as it is it's own chip, and it ain't small...about as big as a Southbridge.

Right now, Lightpeak takes a break and releases what it has. Copper is good enough and we just can't expect home runners to know how to run fiber bends (Do you know someone that can run and bind fiber? I know two...me and one geek friend.) You can tell it's a break and not the full thing by using the mini-display port connector. The hope that it's full fiber may die, but saved for an update that may be called "Lightpeak"...but it's Thunderbolt for now.

Light Peak can be at least twice as fast as USB 3.0, also known as Super-speed USB, and can deliver bandwidth starting at 10 Gigabits per second, with the potential to extend to 100 Gb/s. At its everyman speed, it agency you could alteration a feature Blu-Ray movie in less than 30 seconds.
