ive been wondering if this red socket is USB 3.0 in my Alienware Aurora..please see pic.

That is a Sata port.

USB 3.0 typically looks like this (notice there is no L shape in the port as in your picture).

like a hard drive Sata port?..ooh i get it..soo why is their one clear across the MOBO?..when my HD's are on the otherside..could that be used for hot swapping?

Maybe for the optical drive? I've never understood those ports before.

My Asus M2N SLI Deluxe has that port up there, I never could figure out what it was, even the manual called it "Sata_Raid" which didn't make sense to me. One day I was having issues with the board and on the phone with Asus support, I asked the guy about it and he told me what it was for.

Basically the port is for Raiding an internal Sata drive with a eSata drive on one of the rear panel ports.

It's probably intended for E/SATA usage due to it's placement.
