OK; so for a home system using 2 HDD's in a RAID 1 Software RAID 1 arrary is there any reason that precludes using Black;s verses RE3 HDD's ??????? In other words is there any real advantage to using RE3's over Black Edition Hard drives of the Western Digital brand????

RE3's are Server class SATA Hard Drives. They will for sure work in any RAID setup and are supposed to have a longer MTBF. Mean Time Before Failure. Although, you'd be hard pressed to find out what the MTBF is for the BE drives since it isn't listed anywhere. But they both have 5 year warranties, so they are probably the same in that regard.

I wouldn't hesitate to use BE drives in RAID. However, I would rather use Samsung Spinpoint F3's since they are significantly faster in RAID 0 and 1 and don't cost any more than the WD BE's.

WD pretty much stopped using MTBF ratings for consumer drives since our loads are varied where a server's is pretty predictable. They now list "Reliability/Data Integrity". All blacks hold 300,000 load/unload cycles and <1 in 10 unrecoverable read errors per bits read. What that means to us without breaking out a slide rule isn't very clear still. As Quake states, that 5year warranty and word of mouth is about the extend of what to expect.

Thanks for the input, I think I'll use the WD Blacks; I've had trouble getting a lot of feedback about the Spin-Point F#'s; that is what I originally selected but I think the WD BE will do fine for my appication.
