1amp @ 1volt for 1second= toes up
if you hit it just right - or wrong, as the case may be.
The biggest thing to avoid while getting a jolt is keeping the current from passing through your chest cavity. As in running from one hand to the other, up through a leg and out an arm.
Although, if you get enough voltage behind .5 amps or above, it won't matter. You'll be a french fry.
Nikola Tesla was weird. He was also a genius. If he had had his way, today to get electricity, all you'd have to do is stick your plug directly into the ground. He also was working on a way to transmit electricity thru the air, kind of like microwave, but safer. |

Amps are a measure of how many coulombs per second are being transmitted, which is call the current. Thus, a current of one amp in a wire means exactly 1.6 x 1019 electrons per second are flowing past any given point in the wire. |
Ohhh
so amps are like the width of a pipe and volts are like the amount of water that goes through it
so, if im right, then 10,000volts wont kill you if there's .1amps because the volts can only move through you so fast
the amps limit how many volts get through in a given amount of time- like bandwidth
right?... |

It's actually the other way around. Amps would be the speed water's being pumped through, volts are the pipe diameter, and watts would be the total flow rate.
But... you can still be killed by a very low amp (milliamps, even) jolt if you're subjected to it long enough. Perhaps not charring you like you may expect, but enough to shut your nervous system down. That's still very dangerous if there's noone to revive you, if your body completely goes out of it. |

dude, that link is like, worse than school, worse than biology class
uhhh
but at least i get it
volts is diameter of pipe
amps is speed of juice pumping through the pipe
watts is like the 2 combined |

electricity is interesting.....
The posters above were right in the fact that it is amperage that kills. The weird thing about electricity though is, it doesnt get worse as you get higher. The middle ground is actually the worst. If you get a lot of amperage going through you body its going to stop your heart instantly, if no one is around you, your screwed. However if your working with a buddy that knows CPR there is a good chance you will make it.
The middle amperages are what get you... if you close a low to middle amperage circuit with your hands... first its going to lock your muscles so you wont be able to let go. Then it is going to mess with the timing on your heart, but it wont stop it completly. It will just make it totally irratic, and from what I understand, it's alot easier to start a stopped heart then it is to get the timing correct on and irratic beating heart. Anyway, I guess its just handy to know that if you want to save someone that is suffering from electric shock, it is good to know CPR. =) |

| Actually, the best thing to have is an AED (defibrillator). The electric shock works much better at resynching your heart than simple compressions from CPR. Pure CPR pretty much gives a 10% chance of survival at best during cardiac arrest, while using an AED can give a 30-60% chance of survival (the highest number is for seniors - 65+, and the variance takes account for extremely timely response by a med unit). |

Actually 0.05 Amps is enough to kill you.
The simplest analogy for electricity is to compare wires to a water hose.
Voltage is like pressure, therefore the higher it is the thicker the hose (insulation) needs to be.
Amperage (current) is like flow, the larger the diameter of the hose (wire) the more current it can carry.
Watts is a measure of energy, how much work can be done in a period of time, just like horsepower.
Using the water analogy, a small wire (hose) under higher voltage (pressure) can do the same amount of work as a large wire (hose) with a much lower voltage (pressure) but a larger current flow.
Don't mess around with 120v if you are not properly trained, it kills hundreds of people every year who think "it's only 120". |

Did you make a typo when you were choosing your name?
Was it really supposed to be jiggles instead? |

Don't worry, we're quickly learning otherwise - kinda like when you see a 500lb man that everyone calls 'Slim.' |
