Dont wanna try it, lol, kinda afraid now. The rest of the system looks undamaged but who knows. But like I said, yesterday, it ran fine posted and all. We had it running for a good 2 or 3 minutes w/o a problem, today hooked in the video card, plugged in the molex and powered up the system. Then foosh, flames start shooting out of the Video Card. WTF??

well, if u hooked the card up correctly, then it's apparently a manufacturing mistake, send it back. ive never had anything do that to me before tho, and id be glad the rest of ur system still works.

1) Resize your pictures
2) Contact the dog pound. A failing video card is one thing, but catching on fire in your system is quite another.

turn on the macro mode on your camera, or use the autofocus properly.

It was 2am and the best lighting I had was the kitchen light.

Thanks to all the people with actual helpful advice.

it has nothing to do with lighting. macro mode helps you with close shots. you don't see the blurriness?

do you always take advices as insults?

i definitely think you should call pny. it is an obvious manufacturing defect if the first time the card has power applied to it it shoots out flames. if pny hassels you send an email to the watch dog at maxpc.

Aloha, [H]ard|OCP did post a picture and that's how I found my way over...

I don't have a 6800GT and I can't find any good pictures showing that (or similar Nvidia reference-design boards) any closer than this:

FiringSquad

But the parts under that mini heatsink are part of the power regulation circuitry for the secondary molex connector, and what very likely happened is that your card had a defective part, which went short-circuit. The result would be that it instantly dumped many amps of current, superheated, and 'flashed.' The flames you saw spitting out were that part's casing vaporizing. Good thing you were there to witness the failure and pull the plug before damage occurred elsewhere in the system!

I wouldn't be worried about getting another card of the same type/brand; a failure like this is almost certainly a rare defective component rather than a faulty design. But you are definitely entitled to a free replacement.

I don't think anyone was trying to insult you Emwun. You're getting some good exposure to those pics from this forum and the link at [H]ardOCP, so they're just trying to help you get pics that are a bit more clear :)

As for the size, to keep from breaking the tables they need to have a width at or below 640. It keeps the threads (and the forum as a whole) from becoming an eyesore with unnecessary side-scrolling. I imagine you're perfectly capable, but if you need help due to lack of an appropriate program or any other reason, we'll gladly help you out 8)

Thx

it(stateing the obvios here) looks like the volt regs overloaded. definatly send it back. i had a similer thing(5.5 volt line somehow fried my first 9800, but it happened at the molex, and all the plastic around it swelled... i hate the smell of burning plastic. ill dig up some pics of the card if you want

(yay first post!)

Ouch that sucks. I heard PNY has a terrible warranty plan. So I hope you can get a new one.
