Hi i am starting a new tread so that i can walk you guys trought the building stages.
the original tread is here http://www.maximumpc.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2976

Image
Image

this two pics are just to show you the size of the VIA EPIA-M mini-ITX mobo
its about 7" .

Image

here my father is helping me take some mesure. The pink foam you see is the xact size of the MOBO, so it's perfect to drill pefect holes on the MOBO tray wich i got from an old PC case

Image

Here i am bulding a tray for the psu and hard drive.

Image

the hard drive the psu are mounted on the tray from the previous picture.
the psu is a 90 opus psu, built specifically for cars.

Image

You can see how the laptop DVD ROM will be positioned right on top of the hard drive. Rember there will be a fan between the hard drive and the DVD ROM (this fan is the ludest component of the entire project). if you look at the previous picture you get a better idea of the set up. The black thing in the background is the armrest that will house the computer.

Image

Here you can see MOBO, HARD DRIVE(under the DVDROM), PSU AND DVD ROM on their mounting trays...these trays will go inside the arm rest..it's a tight fit but in the end they fit just perfect.

Image

Another shot .

Image

Here i took the power button, hard drive led. came from the same case i took the MOBO tray.

Image

See next picture to see how i used this piece of meta.

Image

Here I am using that piece of metal to built the support for the MOBO tray and the PSU and DVDROM tray..the black enclouse is the armrest.

Image

This is a view of the inside of the arm rest. The two metal pieces that you see at the bottom of the arm rest will hold the mobo tray and the psu tray in place.

Image

this is a shot of the front panel with everything inside.

Image

This is a top shot with everything inside.

Image

Another top shot.

Image

Back shot...this space will host a fan.

Image

You can see the back with the black plate..there is a fan behind that..

Image

Bottom shot. Looks messy but it really isn't..

Image

Case with arm rest open.

Image

Pretty much everything is finished just got to hook it up in the car...

Image

Another pic

Image

MAIN COMPUTER CASE!!!!!

Image

Unit is in place and working shot from the back seat of the car....

Image

Here you can see the unit...you also see a fan to the right that wasn't on the previous pic...I installed this later on because of heat problems...IT works perfectly and its not on the way..You also see the FM modulator to get sound to the speaker...that the only regret i have..i don't know how to hard wire the speaker..Puf the magic is trying to help me...i am working on it man!!!

Image

Case with dvd tray open...

Image

Armrest closed...NOTE the cd you see on the seat is full of small programs that i got from the MAXIMUM PC cd...i made a collection of the most usefull programs so i can have them at the tip of my finger...great magazine guys.

Image

Cool air goes in and comes out from the front...NOTE TO MY SELF i didn't realize this untill i looked at this pic..but it looks like the grille is scratched or something..i have to take a look tomorrow.

Image

Detail of the wiring that goes to the LCD screen..i made a hole underneath the dashboard and the wires for the lcd screen passes trought it.

Image

This is an outside shot...you think i would have opened the door to get a better shot...duhhh.

Image

YOu don't see it here but the yellow wire from the previous picture goes from the psu directly here...if you guys attempt a project like this email me for the detalis about this set up...you need to use a fuse for safety. DO NOT RUN wire straigh to battery from the psu..

this is a brakdown of the parts i used:
VIA EPIA M10000 MOBO MONARCHCOMPUTER.COM $145.00(thanx One4yu2c for letting me know)

512 MB DDR (266) PC-2100 Corsair MONARCHCOMPUTER.COM $79.00</p>

OPUS 90-watt DC-DC Power Supply MP3CAR.COM $166.99
SLIM LINE DVD-ROM EBAY $26.50
Slimline CD to Desktop IDE Adapter EBAY $5.19
7" Lilliput LCD TOUCHSCREEN vga Touch screen monitor EBAY $281.89
SEGATE 80 GB 7200 RPM HARD DRIVE BESTBUY $60.00

MISC. ITEMS $20.00

TOTAL $784.57

Add another $30 for that stupid fm modulatro that i bought at radio shack.
I had a lot of fun building this pc and i would it again..it took me about 2 weeks of work.
if you have question please let me know i have a lot of usefull links to helpfull websites that i can share

Alright am I the only one that noticed something freaky about these pics? Scroll down and pay attention to them, it looks like they/the backround is moving. Freaky.

that is awsome man... have you conscidered making it so the power button is hotwired to the ignition, so when you start your car the computer turns on and whern you turn off the car it shuts down your pc?

I have done that. Infact the psu comes with a wire just for that reason..but i decided not to use it...sometimes i don't want to turn on the computer..

I mean find the photos linked in the post and scroll down either by moving the slider to the right or just the middle wheel (if you have one) and it looks like stuff is moving behond the pictures... like the angle is changing.

The only thing that concerns me is the HD. Have you tried it running while driving? The laptop HDs are 2.5" and are built for mobility and for getting beat up. With the HD being vertical, I wonder if it helps. Heck, I don't know, I've never tired it, but it seems a good idea to go with a laptop HD. You can get an adapter so that it works the the ATX IDE.

I wanted to know how it works out with a standard HD as I am thinking of building a computer for a Serwer Trailer company which is currently using a laptop for their trailer. They also have a 19"LCD... right above the screen, they also have a USB connector to hook up to all their water-testing instraments and they also want a separate keyboard and mouse so they can close the redundant screen. The laptop is set to travel in the truck. You know what that mean?! They have to plug everything in everytime, then unplug everything everytime. The guy on the field is just going to say "Screw this extra crap, I'm going to use just the laptop and the USB thingy". So I am planning on suggesting a stationary SFF box (the Antec one) with a 2.5" drive with the 2.5" to 3.5" converter to handle the bumps of the road. So I was curious.

Awesome job, btw. I might do something like that down the road... Man that would be sweet! People like you (and Chumly and other modders) inspire me! Thanks!

Arquero
