My internet service is through AT&T. I have a 2wire modem. The speed is 6 megs. My PC is a desktop wired directly to the modem. My wife has a laptop which she uses to connect wirelessly. Whenever she does a major batch upload of pictures to either her website or to her FB page, my WIRED signal drops to nearly zilch.
What can be causing this and is there a way to keep it from happening?

Nothing, she is using all the bandwidth to do her massive upload. She can try using 7 zip to compress the files before she sends and see if that frees up some bandwidth. ATT may be throttling you down as well, thinking you are a bandwidth hog during those times.

I suggest doing the following:

  • Ask your wife how many pictures she's uploading and what their size is. She doesn't need to upload the raw 100 12MP pictures from her camera that are 3-4MB a piece.
  • Call AT&T and see if what Nasty described is really happening.
  • Also ask if you can use a router, or if a router would help if it isn't them.

AT&T "assured" me that they would never throttle back a customer when they use a lot of the bandwidth. They also told me that with my 6 meg speed package they spread the bandwidth over all connected devices. So basically I just have to deal with it...
