Abit KW7 (Socket A/462)
4x512MB DDR PC-3200
Sempron 2800+
Geforce 7600GS AGP 8x

Firstly, I understand this is a very old machine. For the select few that would like to remind me of this, please keep said comments to yourself.
Now that that is out of the way:

I just got an Athlon XP 3200+ (AXDA3200DKV4E) for this pc. the seller had pulled it from a working machine. I installed it, powered it up,
and it doesn't POST. I tried unplugging the power cord, draining all residual power, and clearing the CMOS. I have also tried
reseating the processor. Neither of these two options has helped me. I tried going down to 1 stick of ram, no help.
If I reinstall the Sempron 2800+ it works just fine... BIOS version is v15 latest. CPU is on support list.
any/all help is appreciated.

Are you positive you didn't bend any cpu pins while installing it in the motherboard?

Any beep codes, or any other types of codes via a readout? What were they if you had them?

That is the latest bios update...yes?

Are there any bad caps on the motherboard?

If there are any, either replace them if you can solder or replace the motherboard.

Nasty

Nasty,

I pulled the processor out for a visual inspection and didn't find any bent pins. it does drop into the socket with no force, just like it should.
Would these spots on the underside of the cpu be problematic?

No beep codes of any sort, nothing on screen. I tried removing all the ram so it would beep on me just to see if the brain was working at all, didn't make a sound.

Yes, it is running the latest Bios version.

All the caps on the board are flat and look to be in good shape.

I can put the sempron 2800+ back in at any time and it works. just not with this athlon xp...

it sounds like you may have actually gotten a bad CPU which does happen on rare occasions

I have to agree with gamewizard. I'm not quite sure of what thise spots are, but my feeling is that something has happened to the processor and it looks like it could be heat related. Never good.

thanks for the help... wish the cpu wasn't bad but it can't really be much else.

Here's something that cropped up in my head. Wasn't there a case where lower end AMD processors were rebadged as higher end ones during the Athlon XP run? Like even though it says, for example, Athlon XP 3200+, it was really a Duron or Athlon 1500 or something of the sort.

I would have to dig for that as I don't really have any memory of that. I can say that those spots on there look heat related to me, and in all likelyhood the CPU is toast.
