If I have windows XP on this current hard drive, will the PC I'm building have it if I use this hard drive as the primary drive??
Also, If I bought a secondary drive, would it take long to access my files?
[I'm new to this; my friend isn't online to ask] |

| It doesn't work like that. Once you register a version of XP to a certain motherboard, it won't let you register that same version to a different motherboard. It will probably give you all kinds of errors, or may not work at all. |

Transferring a running XP installation to a new motherboard (especially one with a different chipset) will usually result in the system BSoDing on first boot, or throwing wierd errors later, yes.
However, a Retail license can be transferred to the new build. You will need to reinstall Windows fresh, though.
An OEM license 'dies' with the mobo on which its first activated. Legally, you need to buy a new copy of Windows.
An Upgrade license inherits the rights of the qualifying (upgraded) OS - it "becomes" what was upgraded from.
Martin, if the original XP license is Retail (or, an Upgrade license, and the previous OS was Retail), you're OK to reinstall XP with the new hardware. If it's been a sufficient amount of time since your last install (say, >6 months), you likely won't even have an issue with automatic activation. If you do have an issue, phone activation is typically quite painless (5-minute call.)
As to the second question:
Really, Windows cares not where you keep your data. The only thing that'll affect speed in that department is the speed of the secondary drive. |
