I am getting a new computer and want to convert my old desktop into a linux box for programing, basically every single linux language will be installed on this box. What I want to do is remotely access it in putty or terminal (as I have a mac and a PC) with X11 forwarding. How could I implement this is in ubuntu or know a link I could go to.

It doesn't matter. Linux sucks.

I was trying to set a box up to do some development. I would have thought that the Linux desktop would have gotten better in the 3-4 years since I last touched it. NOOOPE. Still a big steaming pile of fail.

Not a bad server OS though... but still WTF MAN.

For the OP, to actually provide something helpful, http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-serve ... spconfig-3

Good luck!
