It's supposed to be simple. Go to Windows 7 Disk Management. Right Click. Extend Volume. Done!

But when I right-click, the "extend drive" option is unavailable*. I can only "shrink volume".

Layout: Simple
Type: Basic
File System: NTFS
Status: Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)

I have unallocated space which I've freed from another partition ( D: ).

What have I done wrong?

* I can see the words "extend volume", but the letters are in grey, not black (so when I click "extend volume", nothing happens).

Sounds like volume D is extended all the way out already, that is why the option is grayed out....are you trying to combine the two volumes? You may have to right click partition C and choose extend partition.

And yet you post nothing about the partitioning information about the drive itself.

^ That's what happen when I right click C.

No, I'm not combining volumes. I have freed some space from D (by shrinking it), and I want to move this freed space over to C.

What other info do you need to know?

You can't do what you are trying to do with windows tool. You can only extend to the right in windows tool, not go left like you want to.

Try this program to change the sizes of your partition:

http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm

Use the free version.

Looking at the partition icon of the g partition, you cannot merge it into C: but if you wanted to merge part of C: into G: you could.

You may be able to do it...I don't know... here is a tutorial on how to do it using windows tool:

Thanks I finally understood what you meant.

I used Windows Disk Management. Delete D: partition. Extend C: Volume. Done.

I thought you wanted to keep part of the old partition, that is why I suggested using the third party software. Deleting the old partition altogether allowed windows to expand the C: partition to the right, which is the only way it will go. With the third party software you have more options and can expand either way.

Good to hear ya got it up and running the way you want.

For a moment, I considered using a third-party software. But then, I worried that there might be risks of incompatibility. So I stuck to Windows DIsk Management. Thanks for your help anyway.
