So yeah, just as the subject says...

I have the MD4 sums of the .rar files in question, but how do I match this string to the actual file?

Also, I thought the point of a .rar file was that it had it's own hash checking algorithm built in? In other words if you DL'd a rar file and uncompressed it and something was off, or corrupt, it would throw an error and abort the decompression?
The rar files I'm working with decompress just fine but they're not working the way I'm expecting them to (the uncompressed set of files, not the rar itself. As I said it extracts just fine).

Sure its not MD5? Anyway, even if you have the hash, you need someone to post the MD5 hash of the original rar file. Either its included in the rar file or somewhere else externally. It does sport file recovery, but you have to do that before hand. If your files are corrupt, then your pretty much SOL and have to find another source for that archive.

How large is the file?

If it can be redownloaded in a reasonable amount of time, then try that first. If you continue to have issues, then try checking hashes.

I've never heard of an MD4 hash. If its supposed to be MD5, then Gizmo can check it. I know there are better programs, but Gizmo is the only one that I can give you off the top of my head: http://download.cnet.com/Gizmo-Drive/30 ... ?tag=mncol

I'm sorry MD5 not "4". Graveyard shift will do that to a person

I do have the original MD5 hash from the person I'm getting the files from. They're over 1.5gb in size and broken up into two .rars each with it's own unique string of MD5 hashes.

THanks I'll try the Gizmo

Thank you,
I ended up using MD5 Checker. It's small and works well.

...i thought Winrar had some built in hash check feature; guess not

For me rar files are very important. Once I lost all of them and was really disappeared. I used a search engine, I was lucky and found an one tool, which relieved me and probably can help in other situations, for example in this too - rar fixer.
