Maximum PC

Imagine my surprise when I received a phone call from a magazine subscription service...you know, the ones that claim that 15% of the money will go to the cripple childrens fund...and they claim they got my phone number from Maximum PC...used your name to start the phone call, they did...maybe the subscription department has been slipping the subscribers list out the back door for a few extra shekels?

I'm not nearly as annoyed as it seems...just slightly disappointed that the NO BS code seems to have been broken somewhere...

Actually, to be correct, it's "Minimum BS". However, that doesn't necessarily mean that they really, truly, did get it from them. Not everyone's honest when it comes to dial-a-sales-pitch techniques.

It still poses the question of where the solicitor got both the subscriber's name, phone number and knew about his subscription to MPC.

Leaked info? Hacked DB? Or do subscriber lists count as a charitable donation now?

Issue...the caller used my name, and told my wife they were calling from Maximum PC.

A small issue to be sure...but I was already tweaked at missing out on the 2 years for a dollar an issue deal
I got in my e-mail a day or so after mailing it in...at least it went to a good cause...

Okay, I just got a call 5 minutes ago from "future US" 201-257-4086 on my caller ID...
told my wife they wanted to talk to me about "one of my magazines" and hung up before
she could hand off the phone...WTF?

This gets me wondering... Does MPC have a 3rd party client or contractor for their magazine production and shipping. That could be a very viable reason for you information leak. It may be a 3rd party's fault...

So the card that comes with the magazine to renew my subscription isn't secure?
That's too funny...run anti-virus...anti-malware...anti-spyware...firewalls...
and the card that comes with the magazine infects my ear at dinnertime...twice...

I'm just saying that it could be a third party/different company that handles the shipping and production of the magazine. MPC just writes it... I could be incorrect.

OK..Listen up!! MaximumPC does NOT sell Subscribers information whatsoever.
SIMPLY because they would be cutting their own throats. NOW maybe a disgruntled former employee in their mailing department would make more sense. Fact all employees in ALL departments sign non-disclosure agreements BUT..... How many of them really follow those agreements? ESPECIALLY if they get terminated? Heck Future would be more the actual blame...THEY should have ARMED GUARDS watching those low level workers. And actually it is pretty easy to do for them as well. copy and paste the list to a webbased email account like say gmail, or yahoo send it to their home PC, then send it out to the highest bidder from there. Nothing Future can do about it either, just looks like said employee(s) were using their web-based program to send out some email. AND this hasn't happened to MaximumPC subscribers ONLY, BUT it made the news when Road and Track subscribers database hit the internet. So lets put the blame where it belongs...HUMAN INTERACTION! Where ever a human is working, and there is a way to make a buck...HUMANS will do IT!
Maximum PC would NOT sell their subscribers database for the simple reason it would put them out of business.
