So what does this mean for backwards compatibility?

Just make them round like 3.5

I dont see why this is such an issue, I mean really, look at the port, there is a key, if you look at the cable it is keyed, install the cable to the key is opposite the key on the connector! Is it really all the difficult to take 3 seconds to look at the cable to see which way it goes?

There are no keys on USB connectors, also when you crawling under the table it's hard to see anything, let alone look at the usb ports...

"NO, DAD! Don't make me go under your computer desk again! I will be good, I promise!"

"You have been SCAMPERING again, son. That is BAD, you have been NAUGHTY. Go under there and don't come out until the USB cable is plugged in."

Uh huh and dust. Those things get dusty you can't tell what's what.

Paul, you have obviously forgotten the 50/50/90 rule.
Given a 50/50 chance, you'll be wrong 90% of the time.
But I'm one that certainly looks forward a USB that will work no matter which side is 'up'.

One side of the USB plug has a seam...you can even feel it in the dark if you have to.

Wireless charging on all my new Nexus units also makes Micro USB pretty much obsolete...

But certain manufacturers, I'm looking at you DELL!, install the USB connector on their laptops/desktops upside down, so even if you have the plug oriented correctly it still may be upside down depending on the Dell model.

Back before the day that I venture to try my own PC build, I bought a Dell XPS 630i, and for it supposedly being a higher end desktop, I couldn't believe they couldn't get the USBs on the front of the case to be in the proper upright position. I even called them on that, but it sounds like they like to play with our heads. Thanks for your post, big_montana, didn't realize some companies would intentionally do such a upside-down thing.

Oh I WISH USB ports were easy to distinguish. So I have 4 USB ports on the top of my case. Is the up side to the right or to the left? Oops, wrong way and I broke off the fin in one of the ports.
As For micro USB, just try to figure out which way it is orientated by feel or a quick look. That's a big negative.

Wireless charging also has several manufacturers and is certainly not a "standard by any means. Besides, the are plenty of charging docks available that will do the same thing except faster.

It doesn't matter if the connector has a seal on it or not. The orientation within the actual device isn't guaranteed. The things will face left, right, upside down, backwards based not on which direction seems sensible when you're plugging something in, but in most cases it's which makes the best use of space when when it's being fit into the actual product.

Wireless charging for Nexus devices is great, unfortunately not only Nexus devices have USB ports on them. Not to mention that data cannot be transferred through a wireless charging dock.

Hey.That_Dude

Interesting. I wonder if it will be a up/down or just a down port.

I hope they can improve durability, Micro USB ports are ridiculously fragile. The general public can't seem to keep an android phone longer than 2 years before they screw up the port so bad they cant charge it anymore.

I agree.
The cable that came with my Galaxy Note 2 brand new would fell out with a slightest tug to any direction.
