Get ready for an influx of $199 to $249 Windows laptops
A big reason why Chromebooks are selling so well is because they offer up basic functionality at dirt cheap prices. However, what would happen if Windows laptops could easily be found at the same price points? It's a question that will get answered within the next few months. That's because Intel, Microsoft, and notebook makers are collaborating on entry-level laptops that will sell for $199 to $249.
Preliminary data from International Data Corporation (IDC) indicates that the tablet market expanded 11 percent year-over-year in the second quarter of 2014 on shipments of 49.3 million units around the globe. That's not bad, though it's down 1.5 percent sequentially. According to IDC, smartphones with big screen displays have cut into the market for tablet PCs.
"We had a good second quarter." - Mark Zuckerberg with the understatement of the year
It took a bit of time for Facebook to gain some traction in the stock market after filing for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) a little over two years ago, but it certainly appears the world's most popular social network has found its stride. Leaving little doubt of that, Facebook sprinted past analysts' expectations by reporting $2.9 billion in revenue for its fiscal second quarter ended June 20, 2014.
It can be argued that two of the most overlooked components in a PC build are the power supply and monitor. They're not as glamorous as a gnarly graphics card or unlocked processor, but both are critical to the computing experience -- a cheap PSU is asking for disaster, and why skimp on a monitor when you'll be staring at it every time you use your PC? If you're in need of one or the other, you've come to the right place, as today's deals are nothing but PSUs and panels. It starts with today's top deal for a Corsair 1000W RM Series Modular Power Supply for $160 with free shipping (normally $180 - use coupon code: [EMCPCHH42]; additional $20 mail-in-rebate). Starting with the good news, Microsoft beat Wall Street estimates by reporting a 17 percent bump in revenue, which totaled $23.38 billion for the company's fiscal fourth quarter ended June 30, 2014. Unfortunately for Microsoft, that wasn't enough to weather its Nokia Devices and Services acquisition, which contributed to a 7 percent drop in earnings at $0.55 per share.
Visceral Games will use its extra time to make stability and feature improvements to Battlefield Hardline
Electronic Arts originally planned to release Battlefield Hardline on October 21, 2014 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC, but as any gamer knows, release dates are kind of like rules -- they're meant to be broken or ignored. In this case, EA announced it's delaying Battlefield Hardline until "early 2015" so that Visceral Games has more time to implement features born out of feedback from beta players.
Superman's first comic is likely to command $2-3 million
By the end of summer, a rare copy of Action Comics #1 featuring Superman's first appearance will change hands. The valuable comic is going up for auction on eBay where it will almost certainly fetch around $2 million, if not considerably more. Even though it sold for a mere 10 cents way back in 1938, it's estimated that only 50 to 100 unrestored copies remain in existence.
Microsoft chief Satya Nadella caused a whirlwind of headlines and speculation with a comment he made during his company's fiscal fourth quarter earnings call. The way he worded some early rhetoric made it sound like the next version of Windows -- codenamed Threshold and likely to be called Windows 9 -- will ship with but a single SKU rather than multiple versions for smartphones, desktops, gaming consoles, and so forth. However, Nadella wasn't talking about a single OS to rule them all.
