Hmm, the biggest complaints for WhatsApp are its complete lack of privacy. No wonder Facebook snatched it up.

$45 per user for complete name, address, phone #, and all contacts is a steal. sucks that now fakebook has all my info due to someone that had my contact info willing gave it to them as I don't use any "social media"

So Facebook is paying $16 billion for a messaging app no one's ever heard of? LOL!

I don’t get it either. These messaging apps are a dime a dozen—Line, Tango, TextNow, Pinger, TextPlus, etc. These apps have their uses, but $16 billion!?!? No way!

I've also never heard of this.

With unlimited texting nigh ubiquitous away and phones having full email integration this app seems superfluous.

no one? in what hole do you live? Everyone I know uses it because it breaks the texting carrier barriers. You can text anyone regardless if they use Sprint, AT&T, Verizon over iPhone, Android, Blackberry (I think) or others, and it's international. There probably are other apps that let you do that, but Whatsapp is the most used one.

Same hole as me. Never heard of it. Nobody I know uses it. Nobody I know cares. Most people I know just text or Skype. This is a lot of money for a service in an already crowded segment.

I live in America and I've never heard of it.

Where on earth do you live that has "texting carrier barrier"? It's always been possible to text someone else regardless of what carrier they have, international or not.

I personally use Hangouts as my goto messaging app. Most everyone I know uses Hangouts. Noone has even heard of Whatsapp until Facebook bought it.

I'm with kixofmyg0t. I don't think Facebook will be getting their money back on this investment.

Remember ICQ?

Barely. I remember using it on a Pentium I 200 Mhz processor with a few MB of RAM...

Remember Trillian?

Actually, WhatsApp is home to 450 million registered users and it's adding 1 million to the fold each day.

I heard the same thing about Google+.

Take it with a grain of salt.

Good grief.
I should make a messaging app too. I'll sell out for $100,000.
