People actually still get ads on the internet? Adblock Plus + Disconnect + HTTPS Everywhere

Auto-play of ads or music or whatever was the biggest thing I hated about MySpace, and one of the biggest reasons I switched to using Facebook. This is going to suck.

Facebook already makes a killing with banners and games - adding video ads is the one thing that they can do out of greed to accomplish the one thing they traditionally feared most - attrition.

Frankly, if I had to add video ads to all the banners and insanely annoying game invites you can't universally block, I'd not bother with the site again - and I've been on it since 2006 when it was a gigantic nothing of a site to begin with.

I watched it become popular and now I'm about to watch it shoot itself in the foot and die.

Interesting to see the gun held to their own head with the promise of money. More interesting to see if they actually pull the trigger.

facebook is a portrait that people draw of their lives.

I go there a lot less than I used to anyway and while video ads would not make me stop I would go there even less. I generally only go there to see what my kids and family have posted but in the last few months they are posting and putting pictures more on other sites anyway.

People will gripe, and many will hurriedly turn their workplace computer speakers off... I don't know when Facebook is going to hit that tipping point when people finally close their accounts, the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. I still have my account. Much as I hate the thought of yet more obnoxiousness from FB, I'll continue to use it for now. I used to have G+ on the phone, but it was so buggy and annoying that I uninstalled it, knowing that I still had access to it on the computer, and FB still in either format.

The only reason I continue to use Facebook is to recieve updates and offers to win products from companies I like. I have won over $1200 in products from one particular company.

This is really not surprising. The day Facebook launched it was the worst designed website of all time. And it has done nothing but get worse with time. The same can be said for their mobile app. I rarely ever use it and absolutely hate it. But video ad's would turn a "rarely ever" into a "never ever".

overall, people will complain about this, but roughly 98%-99% of Facebook's current users will continue to keep using it. This is also why FB keeps doing this crap is because they can, the user-base let's them get away with it without putting up a fight, or they'll use workarounds like ABP/other blocking tools. Until the majority of the users tell FB 'no more of your BS" then nothing will change. I'm not a big social netorker, but I've found Google + to be much better. No drama and no BS.

Except that used to be Facebook until they've opened themselves up.

If people migrate over to another social network like Google+, it's only a matter of time before history repeats itself.

avatar

PCLinuxguy

there's already Twitter for that hehe.

I hope ad-block for facebook would block these.

If it weren't for certain private fb groups, I would of left fb for good.

"it's likely these 15-second ads aren't going to keep the 80-100 million US users...from logging in each and every day."

That's how the end always begins. "We've got so many customers that we can do anything to them and not worry about it." Many, many companies have found out that's not the case.

I disagree. Facebook has been doing all sorts of shady and underhanded things like this, and you'll always get people voicing their dislike of it, but every single person I've come across that complains about X,Y, or Z on what Facebook is doing still use and recommend it to their friends (if their friends aren't using it yet). FB will keep doing whatever it wants to like this because it can and until every single uder on it leaves in a show of who holds the power then nothing will change. This is why I use Google+. don't have to deal with the drama and BS.

My wife and I left facebook two years ago and we haven't missed it since. There are other ways to keep in touch. Facebook is yet another way that human relationships are becoming distorted. People always seemed to say things that they'd never say in person. I'm glad to be done with it.

I love facebook, but this is taking it way over the line of acceptability for me. I see one forced video ad on my feed and I'm gone, I'll stick to twitter!

avatar

Yea, I hate watching those ridiculous adds that YouTube has. I've seen some that where like 30min long. I mean really who is going to watch that? You could skip it, but that is besides the point. I know they are saying 15 second ones. But that is how it starts. But, on the flip side maybe Gordon will have a great rant about it.

Going public has to be the worst move FB made.

Adblock Plus and ScriptSafe. I don't care about the ads on facebook.

avatar

torquemator

I'd like to know how they're going to deliver it. I don't have flash installed on my facebook-only pc, it's probably too slow to play any videos anyway, which is why it was relegated to fadebook-only status, rather than trashbin status.

avatar

Teflon Don

It seems like they've had a grand plan all along, but we are only finding out about it a little at a time.

I've been looking for one final reason to cancel my Facebook account anyway. This would be the final nail in the coffin. The only thing I use it for is news from places like MaximumPC, NCIX, Newegg, Blizzard, Gamespot, etc. I don't even watch TV anymore because of commercials, so why would I tolerate them on a social website?

It's been a long time coming, but Facebook is going the way of Myspace.

People still use Facebook?

avatar

tenchymuyo2

Hopefully Adblock Plus can weed it out....

avatar

FrostyWinnipeg

Waits for Facebook to buy off Ablock Plus now.

I actually wouldn't give a crap about Facebook if it weren't for the news I get from subscribing to pages for various companies and websites. I could go without the social networking aspect, I don't care if someone ate a grilled cheese sandwich or is hanging out at Hooters.

Adds wont bother me at all as I never use facebook

avatar

"Would you still continue to use Facebook if video ads are introduced?"

Nope, at that point I will be saying goodbye to Facebook without looking back.

Commercial Ads are what drove me away from TV.
