I used to get excited to see new boards, but since the fall of the North Bridge they've become a bit by the numbers. They've somehow managed to push the price up though. I guess that's good...for the manufacturers

Routing the RAM and keeping in the correct timing is requiring more expensive board materials and more layers, thus the cost increase.

Very true, but we've spent a large part of a decade with RAM twice as fast as it's predecessor, and that ability really hasn't shown out in the form of large or even noticeable performance (in more mundane tasks).

I guess I'm weighing it against advances and costs of something like an SSD with SATA 6Gbps versus motherboards that are about one hundred to one hundred and fifty dollars more. One of these has gotten better, and demonstrably cheaper, the other has gotten better, and quite a bit more expensive.

Ram is just the easiest example to actually see the layout change with. Another thing: Pcie has doubled twice. Everything is moving toward a serial point to point topology so you can't combine buses like you used to be able to do. Thus routing all of those peripherals gets more difficult.

SSD boards got nothing on motherboard production. Sure they make a difference but only because you are human slow.

Aren't mATX mobos more of a square sized board with equal dimensions along each side?

That pic is not the micro, its another classified ATX board.

The fudzilla link has a pic of the mATX board.

This has to be the wrong picture I count 8 mem slots. 4 on each side of the cpu

The Mac

it is, its an ATX board.

The fudzilla link has the mATX.

Wait, I thought Micro ATX was only sized for 4 expansion slots? This looks like the full 7-slot standard ATX.
