Was getting so ready to rage at another developer destroying their product with a free-to-play(freemium) model. Glad I was mistaken.

Good on ya Epic, though I would have gladly spent $50 on your game.

Any word on platform support? Linux, please!

Definitely looking forward to this. I think it's been a while since we've had just a pure competitive deathmatch game released.

UT99 was one of the games that introduced me to PC gaming (along with Half-Life). I can't imagine two better games as introductions to gaming.

I was just waiting to read that line where it said "ad supported" and I"m SOOO glad it never came. I truly love this idea. Unfortunately you need to be a company that can front the development money until the exchanges start rolling in (years later), but I would LOVE to see this take off.

I just hope they don't try remaking Face again. The first one was nothing but a spawn camping killing field. It needs to stay done and overwith.

My biggest concern is the maps in general--too often we see closed-in, tight maps and never something a bit more open, frightening, and scary.

I'm glad Epic finally is showing the PC some love. This would go great with Oculus VR.

@scatter -- Epic has switched to a subscription model for access to the engine and tools and it costs $19.99 a month. So anyone contributing to the game is already making Epic Games money on their subscriptions. Its an interesting business model where the money is made off of the content creators.

So basically then we'll be paying for all of the mods and addons that the community used to make for free because it now costs for them to make them.

Again, nothing is free.

While I absolutely LOVED the original UT I'm skeptical about this. Nothing is truly free so I wonder what they're going to charge to have access to.

I just can not say enough good things about UT! It's a unique game experience and my personal favorite. Good to see they are finally making a new iteration and that the community will be directly involved.

To hell with UT, make an UIII already!

I see what you did there.

I hope it's nothing like Ghost Recon Phantoms which is also free. BUT, the weapon upgrade system is more about how much are you willing to spend to have a tactical advantage. Oh sure, you can just play and accumulate points to buy new weapons, but in the mean time some players are buying mega upgrades that cost a pretty penny and making you pay for not doing the same. I heard one player boast he had spent $200.00 on weapon upgrades. Not my idea of an even playing field.

Excellent news! Here's to hoping it isn't coded for consoles with a horribly inefficient interface. Perhaps Epic is choosing to make it a show off piece for what their game engine can do. I wonder if they are working with Oculus (cough) I mean FaceBook.

They already said in their youtube video released today that they are only developing for PC and MAC. Which is great news. They won't have to worry about fees every time they need to update the game. A great day to be a PC gamer.
