Last I checked the Tegra4 has about half the GFLOPS (and assumed "power") of the PS3. You would need to add a 15W Geforce 710M chip to your tablet to get PS3 power (between the GPU and a quad ARM chip, they should be able to handle all CPU abilities of the cell).

The tablet hardware field is wide open. EA could simply release such a tablet if they wanted to sell tablet games with console quality graphics.

Bibeau made his comments to IGN, saying that smartphones will also soon boast console quality graphics.

It all depends on how much optimization is left in the coding. I would reckon not that much, maybe twenty or thirty percent, but you never know.

While it is possible, I believe that battery life will suffer greatly. Another problem is that Touch does not work well with most games. But these Blind Fools are so Touch Crazy that they want everything on Touch just so they can make a buck.

Is this the same EA exec who said the X1 and PS4 are two generations ahead of current high-end gaming PCs?
To be fair, my phone has more ram than a PS3 or Xbox. Though graphics are another matter, the tech in those consoles is pretty dated by now.
Still doesn't explain why they're pushing to get high graphic games on tablets but not the console that comes with a tablet built in. Must really want to expand that freemium market.
I weep for what they're doing to Plants Vs. Zombies.

You can't compare console specs to pc as if they're 1=1. I suspect that even a titan can't compete against PS4 graphics. Consoles are way more efficient than a pc and developers can program for them in a confined manner using every ounce of performance (ideally) that they can get. Have you even seen some of those next gen game images? I fear that I'll have to SLI my gtx780 to run then for the pc version.

By what logic do you believe AMD built an entire system as powerful as a PC with two 780s for less than the cost of a single card?

I haven't seen any next gen graphics in person, but I'll keep an eye out next week at Comicon.

I've seen screenshots and video of the next gen consoles. They look like a ~2008 PC game. Not impressed.

You're either in denial or need to get your eyes checked. Next gen graphics make crysis3 look really bad. http://wololo.net/2013/02/21/videos-the-graphics-of-the-ps4-new-games-and-tech-demos/

What PC version of "crysis3" are you talking about? The one with the rampant consolitis or the one after the patches and mods that treat a lot of the consolitis symptoms? I ask, but I'm not sure it matters as both blow the PS4 and XBone tech demos away.

I'd already seen those videos. They are unimpressive. I remember more impressive Nvidia & ATI/AMD tech demos from years past.

My low-tier AMD "scorpio" PC runs circles around the pending PS4 and XBone. There's no reason for me to buy them, they do nothing for me except give me hope that in the near future PC ports of console games will, due to the increase in console computational power, _almost_ take full advantage of my dated hardware.

I'm not sure what you've smoked to believe that, but here is a comparison of PS4 graphics vs PC graphics (with a 680 GTX). The comparison is very good for seeing the missing graphics quality and stuttering on the PS4.

That video just proved what I was saying, the gtx680 has much more raw power than the hd7870 spec gpu on the ps4 and the difference on them is really negligible. Not to mention that the unreal 4 engine for the ps4 and that demo is only a port and incomplete, therefore not giving you a fair comparison.

Ghok

That's not what you were originally saying.

I was saying that you can't blindly compare specs as if they are 1 = 1... and when the real games actually come out i "suspect" that they'll need way more power to run because of the wasteful nature of the pc.

You stated "I suspect that even a titan can't compete against PS4 graphics."

As the video shows, a 680 runs the game more smoothly than the PS4, therefore,

Titan > 680 = your suspicions are wrong.

We don't know that until we see some console ports for the PC and not the opposite. Unreal engine 4 which that demo was based on is a work in progress and was ported from the PC which isn't that hard to do anymore but it also means that it won't be a fair assessment.
I'm all for PCs and I'm not trying to glorify the console, I just think credit should go where credit is due, I hope the upcoming games will push me to SLI my overclocked 780.

I don't see why this won't be possible. Technology will continue to improve across the board as it always has.

I don't think the thing here is console quality graphics on a technical level, but from a practical standpoint. The PS Vita for instance, almost looks as good as a PS3, but the GPU is far weaker. Similarly people feel the 3DS is almost as good as the GameCube/Wii, but I don't think its GPU can touch the GameCube's.

avatar

vrmlbasic

The 3DS looks abhorrent IMO, much less than the gamecube. I'm sure that I've seen better graphics on a Sega Dreamcast than on a 3DS.

Smartphones I'm a little skeptical.
Tablets sound reasonable though. The next gen consoles are already using APU's, who says you can't cram one (less powerful bordering the older consoles yes) into a tablet?
