I don't believe that I've played a CryEngine game that wasn't, by design or developer failings, an unoptimized mess.

If you are paying $10/month to use their game engine with no royalties, how does that work after you have finished making your game? By that I mean what happens after your game is on the market? Do you have to continue paying the $10 for so long as your game is on the market?

That is where the royalty comes in. I didn't read the source announcement but from the article it appears that CryEngine does not charge a royalty.

Thats darn cheap. Without any royalties, how they can make money out of this?

Support.

Software as a service means you don't pay for the software itself. But if you want any help from the company, pay up.

And there'll probably be a lot of support tickets.

"as a service" implies cancellation of subscription means losing the service.

I have a feeling Unreal is the same way.
