The need for one of these is mostly based on personal taste, so
the answer to this question is simple.

If you care about surround sound & have a kick-ass 4.1 or better speaker set up, then yes, you need a dedicated sound card!

If you have a basic El-Cheapo speaker setup, & you could care less about sound quality, then continue to use your integrated sound card.

I use a Xonar in my present rig and the difference in sound between it and the better than average integrated sound of my ASUS Rampage II is very noticeable. My next rig will also have an add in sound card, perhaps one of these new CL ones.

My Rampage II Extreme came with an ASUS branded X-Fi add-in card, there was no onboard audio, so I have no idea what the hell you're talking about!

There is a Gene model that didn't come with the add-n sound card. Maybe he has that version?
