I smirk when I read or hear someone that they preordered a game. This used to be a thing when games where physical objects. If they made 100,000 copies of Awesome Game, and 200,000 people wanted to buy it, those who preordered it would be guaranteed to have it. But in this day and age of digital distribution, why would you preorder? The only reason to preorder would be if it has perks associated with it, like a credit, discount, free DLC, etc.

I agree but I also believe that this is yet another reason why we're seeing so many Early Access games. There's really no point of pre-orders any more. Early Access provides the publisher all of the same benefits

It's rare now, having been burnt a couple of times, but DLC was my reason to pre-order Thief. On the whole I'm less likely to buy games at full price but will do so in certain cases and supposedly limited DLC will tempt me to dig a little deeper in my pocket (partly as I want to play the extra story content the first time through - see also Deus Ex HR); of course I could wait until it's re-released and costs me £3.24 in a Steam sale(ie DE:HR Directors cut).

Early access might provide the publisher with 'all the same benefits' (not sure what they are) but as a person who plays SP games in the majority, I'm avoiding all early access games as I want a finished game/story (ok, so not all games are finished at final release) and not one that I have to repeatedly go back over the storyline just to bug test part A of game X - I'm sure to get rather bored.

No link found (says the gullible chap who pre-ordered a game)

Ah, only if Steam would provide some quality assurance. That would be nice, but far fetched.

Great idea but it's unfortunately a case of closing the barn door after the horse has bolted. Pre-orders for games have gone the way of the Dodo and have pretty much been replaced by Early Access games which I would imagine we won't be offered refunds for. But hey, it sounds like they're offering their customers something.

They had to after GoG decided to allow full refunds on their games even after purchase and initial download

Even EA and Origin allows for returns. I think that allowing them is a great consumer friendly policy. However again, only allowing them on pre-orders when they're selling less and less pre-orders nowadays really only gives the impression of good will.
