DO NOT USE. Get CCleaner instead.
Terrible for anyone who needs or wants control over changes to their computer, and/or anyone who uses software that needs specific settings unchanged for it to work properly. GF makes changes without letting you control what it changes or even showing you what it's going to change.

Furthermore, Avast falsely advertises a 30-day money back guarantee on front page...if you don't like it, you're stuck with it and there's no way of knowing what the product is like before buying because there's no trial. Well, supposedly, there's the money-back guarantee but they just ignore your request until 30 days runs out.

Avast just purchased and rebranded Jumpshot, which was a kickstarter project.

If you go to the Avast website you will find many posts from people complaining that it doesn't work. Nor will the program tell you what it is going to clean for the few that have gotten it to work. No thanks. To be honest even though I use Avast I honestly feel it is becoming way too bloated. Just like AVG did to itself.

Totally free..and I feel it does a bit better job of cleaning up than CCleaner does.

lol.. an entire page of responses and only 1 person saying they could get it run.

That's a pretty terrible product launch.

avatar

The Mac

it wasnt worth the 3 minutes it took to run, it tells you nothing.

"It's not you, it's us... your computer is not supported at this time"

Guess it can't handle a home built pc rig! LOL!

For just three easy payments of $XX.XX we'll clean your PC of performance robbing detritus.
BUT WAIT!!! THERE'S MORE!!!
For a small shipping and handling charge we'll tell you we can't do that now and please come back later.

I have discovered if you make a Windows 7 PE disk with the network drivers available to load through the

drvload whatever.inf

It does work and scan your system.

My system was clean so I don't know how well it actually works. If you do have problems it will cost you money to have them fix them.

avatar

The Mac

i had no problems running it on win7pro 64bit on a domain.

avatar

cybernard

I have the same thing and it didn't work even as a local or domain admin. Must be the AV or something.

avatar

The Mac

sounds like it, im running SEP enterprise, with local policy controlled by the domain (2010SBS)and NAV local firewall policy enabled on the server.

Check to see if your local windows firewall is enabled, and disable if if your domain policy lets you (and assuming your AV has one).

Ive fixed all kids of annoying issues by doing that due to overriden firewall settings.

I swear to god, SECPOL is the Anti-christ.....

Win 7 Pro 64bit.

"It's not you, it's us. Check back later..."
LOL
Why even bother promoting this schlock if it's not even fully baked!?!

Well I think you guys (MP) should run a test on this program and see if it is up to the task.

they're too busy making Facebook contests :)

Our marketing team does all of that, we are not really involved. We aren't opposed to them however as it's free gear for fans/readers.

I really dislike fix-it utilities that don't give you any real information about what they found.

Nor does it seem, from the free scan, that you can pick and choose what items to fix.

That seems very dangerous to me.

avatar

The Mac

um, the free scan did not boot into linux.

avatar

Paul_Lilly

That might be a feature of the actual clean-up portion. From the press release:

"The Avast GrimeFighter product boots in Linux, allowing it to detect and remove files that can’t be detected while Windows is running. The result is a more effective cleaning that truly enhances performance, optimizes security, and prolongs the lifespan of PCs."

avatar

The Mac

Its pretty worthless either way since is doesn't tell me what it actually found.

Downloading this free software is a total waste of time, as there is no way to compare before and after results without buying the full version.

avatar

blackcat77

It didn't work for me either and I have W7 Pro. Maybe Open DNS is tripping it up...

avatar

TommM

"There's also a bit of cloud play at work. Results of various scans are uploaded to the cloud...."

No thanks.

not ready for windows 8... "The GrimeFighter crew are now preparing for combat against Grime in the harsh Windows 8 conditions. Please, check back soon."

I'll wait for a few benchmark tests. All the reviews I found are of people not realizing they have to pay if they want the software to fix the problems it finds.
