For $370, it looks like a good in-home streaming machine for steam. With an external HDD, running win7 WMC and HD Homerun hooked up to the network with a cable card, this thing will replace the cable dvr box with no problem with the additional benefits of being a full fledged computer able to run the web.

"cable dvr box"

Dafuq? What ancient anvil is that?

Would be nice if we can install Linux on this. Running any Microsoft OS on here will make it slow and unstable.

It's nice to see new formats, but that could never take the place of a full tower gaming rig. Still, I think it's really cool. The price is insane. With a wireless keyboard and mouse, there's so much potential there.

No kabini option?

avatar

Innomasta

Not sure they could get away running Kabini fanless?

I'm not trying to be some kind of fanboy here. I just feel like a Kabini option would bring a lot to the table that would balance out the Atom/ discrete GPU combo that is already offered. For one I believe (although I don't really have access to the numbers right now) a single Kabini APU, while being higher power than the Celeron, would consolidate away the need for a dGPU, lowering the overall power requirements; things like that.

Way better than a media streaming device

But will it be able to run Steam In-Home Streaming?

lol quad core Celeron. I was thinking Haswell i7 or i5, maybe an i3 ... but wow ... a Celeron?!

Just ... no.

avatar

vrmlbasic

Better than an Atom. Truly that brandname is burned.

avatar

Ghost XFX

Since when did you need a i7 just to run a web browser? Use of the celeron is a good decision here.

This kind of unit would be great for work places that provide their employees with online access without the need for said employee to have a desk or be an office worker. (ie, a production worker on break could use a unit like this in his spare time...)

Mediziner

What's wrong with a Celeron? This is a box built for watching videos, surfing the web, checking email, and other basic stuff, not Crysis 3 at max.

Some people just don't understand what most people actually do with their computers...

This might actually be pretty good for a small, low watt Steam machine with the 8 GB RAM and 1TB options.

avatar

vrmlbasic

Only 512 MB of VRAM doesn't sound like the makings of a quality 1080+ gaming machine to me.

avatar

Pie Eater

No, but this particular Celeron isn't half bad, and paired with the GT 820M a good amount of games can run medium-low settings at 720p. I personally wouldn't use it, but someone looking for something small as a media streaming device or (low end) gaming mini rig for LAN parties might. Looks like it could go head-to-head (if not, beat) an A10 6800k. "Steam machine" was the wrong term to use

This is sarcasm right?
