Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime Tablet is Coming, But When?

Paul Lilly

We know almost everything there is to know about the upcoming Eee Pad Transformer Prime device from Asus except for two very important things: how will it perform and when is it going to be released? Fortunately, while we don't have concrete answers to either of those questions, there are enough clues to make educated guesses about both of them, and they're both encouraging.

On the performance front, the Eee Pad Transformer will come rocking an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor. There's actually a fifth core nestled inside that will handle the bulk of operations so battery life doesn't go kaput after a just a short while, but when needed, all four of the Tegra 3's main processing cores will kick into action. There's also 1GB of DDR2 memory and 32GB or 64GB of flash storage. All this will eventually come wrapped in Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) for what looks to be a smooth computing experience.

The million dollar question, then, is when will it be released? It's looking like the second week of December. We originally thought the Transformer Prime would arrive on December 9, which is the date GameStop has listed on its pre-order page, but it might make an appearance a day early. Newegg went and updated its own pre-order page to reflect December 8th as the release date.

Either way, the Transformer Prime will run $500 for the 32GB model and $600 for the 64GB model. Add another $150 if you want a keyboard dock.
