    HP Envy TouchSmart 4 Review

Optional keyboard backlighting spruces up the Envy 4’s black and brushed-metal interior. The most enviable part is the price

This we know: Windows 8 is more usable with a touchscreen, plain and simple. Whether that’s a practical scenario for tower-and-monitor setups is arguable, but it turns out that using touch on a laptop comes pretty naturally—even more so than we expected.

Microsoft’s re-imagined OS is only half the equation

As has been reported exhaustively by now, Windows 8 can be a very unsettling experience for longtime Windows users. It’s like going to visit your parents and finding dad decked out in drag. The person you’ve known for so long is still there, but a new, unexpected element to his persona has you flummoxed and fumbling for how to behave.

    HP Elitebook 2560p Review

To call HP’s 2560p an “ultraportable” is pushing it. It has a slightly smaller footprint than the Toshiba R830, with a screen size of 12.5 inches, but it’s heavier by more than a pound. With its power brick, you’re looking at more than five pounds, including a battery that protrudes a full inch from the back of the notebook’s body. This is no dainty package.

    Toshiba Portégé R830 Review

There was a time when Toshiba’s line of Portégé business ultraportables was the epitome of sleek utility, particularly in the days of the R500 and R600. Samsung stole some of that show when it released the Series 9 (reviewed here)—the closest a PC has come to a MacBook Air to date. But while the Portégé R830, much like the R700 before it, won’t win any design contests, it offers many useful amenities in a very-portable package.

BAPCo fires back at AMD and Nvidia confirms it quit too.

Responding to allegations that the new SYSMark2012 benchmark isn’t valid for today’s hardware, BAPCo fired back at AMD and said the chip company voted in favor of 80 percent of the proposals in the benchmark.

Business Applications Performance Corporation or BAPCo officials also denied that they tried to expel AMD from the group after AMD started publically grousing.

    HP EliteBook 8740w Review

It’s difficult to pick just one standout feature of the HP EliteBook 8740w mobile workstation. Certainly a bright, 17-inch, 10-bit LCD panel that’s capable of displaying more than 1 billion colors and remains visible at up to about a 170-degree offset without any color degradation is worth noting. But so is the notebook’s durable design, with its spill-resistant keyboard, magnesium-alloy chassis, and magnesium-aluminum display enclosure. Then there’s also the 8740w’s impressive performance that runs circles around our zero-point configuration.

    Toshiba Portégé R700 Review

Posted 11/10/2010 at 11:14am | by Katherine Stevenson

In honor of the 25 years Toshiba has been making laptops—starting with the T1100 in 1985—Toshiba is dubbing its new R700 an “anniversary” system. The laptop is the newest addition to Toshiba’s venerable Portégé line of business ultraportables. It follows on the heels of last year’s R600, which received a 9/Kick Ass in our August 2009 issue, and the R500 before that.

But the R700 differs from those two models in some pretty significant ways—Toshiba says this represents a new direction that will be mimicked in all of its laptops going forward. For one thing, the R700 isn’t as wafer-thin as the R500/600, although it still sports a very slim profile at just a tad over one inch thick, and weighs a mere three pounds. The chassis is reinforced with an internal honeycomb design and features a magnesium-alloy top with an attractive anodized black finish. Even when held by one corner, the laptop feels sturdy and rigid.

    Lenovo ThinkPad X100e

    Posted 09/29/2010 at 3:15pm | by Daniel A. Begun

A netbook that thinks it’s an ultraportable. Or is it an ultraportable that thinks it’s a netbook?

The Lenovo ThinkPad X100e suffers from a bit of an identity crisis. Lenovo calls the notebook an entry-level “ultraportable,” but the X100e’s diminutive 11.6-inch display and 3.3-pound weight scream netbook. Depending on how you configure it, the scales can tip either way.

    HP EliteBook 2540p Review

In last year’s ultraportable notebook roundup (August 2009), HP’s EliteBook 2530p put in a strong showing, wowing us with its good looks, sturdy construction, and strong performance. Its successor, the EliteBook 2540p, is strikingly similar in many regards but has the advantage of new and improved components and a lower price.

At 11.1x9.5x1.5 and a lap weight of three pounds, 16 ounces, the 2540p is not the slimmest or lightest business ultraportable out there, but frequent travelers will no doubt appreciate how solid it feels. The notebook—which is built to military standards for toughness, we’re told—sports a magnesium-alloy casing with a scratch-resistant brushed metal exterior, durable hinges, and a secure clasping mechanism. The keyboard is sizable and easy to type on, and you’re given both a touchpad and TrackPoint for navigation. The notebook also offers a handy, popout keyboard light.

    HP Mini 5102 Review

Is “business netbook” a misnomer? Aren’t business notebooks supposed to be both portable and powerful, while emitting a confident and businesslike aura? Can a netbook ever be enough for a business user? HP is one of the few companies out there betting that a netbook can be appealing to a business audience.

The HP Mini 5102 certainly looks businesslike. Its squared-off, all-metal chassis, matte-black magnesium alloy base, and brushed-aluminum lid exude a much more professional vibe than most netbooks, including HP’s own consumer line. And though its base configuration hews close to the standard netbook build of this generation, HP offers a wide array of options that can turn the 5102 into something else entirely.
