I'm sure i have seen that symbol before, O yes it is the same symbol the the artist Prince use now. Is Microsoft and Prince collaborating together now or is the author of this review a fan of Prince?.

Anyway that symbol in the Microsoft logo is very shady.

Questions: Why is it there
What does it mean
What does it say about Microsoft
Or is the artist Prince a big fan of the new Windows 8

I'll call it "NIMH", aka not in my house. I don't want to go back to a Windows 3.1 GUI look.

avatar

Xessive

They call it "Pane." Like a Window pane. Also because it is. Pun intended.

avatar

livebriand

Call it POS UI. That says it all...

avatar

johna

They should name it DOA (dead on arrival)

Just Windows. I mean there is a button to take you to the "Desktop" which would then be simply the "Windows Desktop."

Simplicity is key.

Window "Panes".

I vote for "The New UI" or "The New Windows UI"

avatar

I just logged on solely to say, "Kick-ass logo, MaximumPC!". I hope Prince saw this! ~D. ;)

I think they should call it "Round".

That way, when I get forced to use the crap some day (at work) I can tell myself how fun it is to pound square tiles into the Round UI.

Serious suggestion: Tiles, as others have said.

Absolutely hate: Live Tiles

Other serious suggestion: Rocket. Why not. Just get away from the whole tiles and metro thing and get something totally new. Then they can talk about how fast you'll be with the Rocket UI.

How about Carnival, or Circus (haha).

As for the fill-in name: Windows 8 Style UI. Who..., what..., is that best you can think of? Seriously? Just drop Style and call it the Windows 8 UI. That is half way believable.

If the UI was cool, I would suggest naming it after something in Star Trek, like Carol Decker did with her band (T'Pau). But since I hate this new UI, I don't want them to do that.

Yeah, I know. Borg UI.

I think they should call it "Panels"
As in "I used to have all these windows till some SOB covered them with panels".

avatar

jonnyohio

This made me laugh

avatar

maxeeemum

How about "Start Screen" for the tablet version!!!!!!!!!!!

How about "Optional Start Screen" in the "Start Menu" under "Programs" for the desktop version!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

avatar

warptek2010

Since Apple uses the "I" in everything and Microsoft desperately wants to be the next Apple why don't they use "ME". The ME interface or the Windows MILLENIUM interface. See what I did there?

avatar

Nexing

Well, wait till they find out that someone copied the new colour scheme and windows logo from icethesite's ones http://www.icethesite.com/category/chess/chess-news/

On 2nd thought... they don't share the same rectangled measures as Samsung and Apple devices, so they might still get away with it.

avatar

aarcane

This is microsoft's most recent forray into a walled garden. I think they should call it "The Wall" ask pink floyd and facebook to join them for an add campaign.

avatar

whiznot

Apple and blackberry are taken so how about the Lemon UI.

avatar

admobadmo

Kindergarten.

It's full of basic shapes and simple colors.

avatar

dedgar

I'd like to have call it GONE.

Maybe a nice inoffensive name like Bob. Oh, wait a minute.... :)

What happened to the good old days when they named programs after their dog or some obscure Sci Fi reference. Let's call it:

"Some dumbshit with an MBA came up with this"

Hmmm, Formerly Known as Metro...

F.K.M.

Is MS trying to tell us something?

avatar

jesse_n_sf

You cannot sue for a generic term like that. I don't know what people are thinking. Why don't they sue every street car subway in the world for calling it a Metro. Metro is short for Metropolitan, just like "App Store" is short for application store. It's all too generic to be able to sue someone for.

avatar

Mr Jim

Well, I see it this way. Microsoft has built an operating system that is supposedly going to be locked to their ecosystem. It has been reported to rely heavily on cloud based functions (similar to iOS). And it is clearly geared so that non-computer savvy users will have a nice, tidy and simple interface allowing them to check email. You could call it:

Distributed Utilities Management Bundle/Blunder.

I think I will call it D.U.M.B. for short.

avatar

Alegomaster

I think I will call it Doing Un-useful Monopolistic Business :)

The official name is SHINGLES

Ok, I have to give it to you. That was funny.

Kstew had an affair with Metro and now Microsoft has to end it. I'm devastated.

How about "Personal Operating System"? Of course it would soon be abbreviated to

Windows POS

This already exists. It's called WEPoS:

avatar

USraging

code name it 'noob'.

avatar

WretchedSoul

If it really did boot up in half of Win 7's time, they could call it "Bullet Train", or if it's still not fast, "Steam Engine Train".

avatar

Microsoft Tiles 1.0

avatar

Neufeldt2002

They are going to call it.... "The New Desktop", at which point they will kill the desktop "app" with the first service pack and claim that no one was using it anyway.
