Vista SP1 RC's Here - Grab It Now

comment Commentsprint Printemail EmailDeliciousDiggStumbleUponReddit

Microsoft has now rolled out the public release of Windows Vista SP1 RC. Follow the appropriate link:

Be patient, especially if you're going after one of the full install packages (which are over 500MB each).

Tried the Beta? Read This First

If you installed a beta of Windows Vista SP1 RC, uninstall it first and wait at least one hour before continuing (you might get cramps in your CPU otherwise). Read Microsoft Knowledge Base article KB936330 for details.

Before SP1, You Also Need...

When you install Windows Vista SP1 using the full install download, the system checks to see if updates discussed in KB937287 (updates servicing stack to permit the service pack to be successfully installed), KB938371 (updates installer and permits service pack to be uninstalled before the final SP1 is installed), and KB937287 (updates BitLocker support on Windows Vista Ultimate and Enterprise editions) have been installed. They've been released separately via Windows Update, but if you don't have them yet, they must be installed first. (update 12-12-07 - Don't worry, the SP1 RC installer program will install them as needed).

If you use Windows Update to get Vista SP1 RC, you must install these updates before you will see Windows Vista SP1 offered as an update and they are displayed only after you install the update for Windows Update referenced earlier.

Stay Tuned for More

I'm downloading Vista SP1 RC right now, and I'll be back later with my first impressions. In the meantime, read the Windows Vista SP1 Guides for IT Professionals to get up to speed on the goodies awaiting you.

avatarDon't panic! Here's how to reactivate your copy of Vista....

Reboot and login to Vista, a dialog window will come up. In that window, click the option "Access computer with reduced functionality". Once you do that, Internet Explorer or Firefox browser will open. In the address bar type "c:\windows\system32\slui.exe" press enter and follow steps to Activate over the Phone.

avatarSP1 turns full version into a Evalution Copy?

After I ran the stand alone update my desktop now says
"Windows Vista (TM)
Evaluation copy. Build 6001"
On the desktop. So now the full version of vista is turned into a evaluation copy?
While the readme file says the SP1 beta has a expiration date, it says nothing about turning your expensive software into an evaluation copy.

avatarRead the Documentation

It does not turn your software into an eval. If you downloaded the updates prior to installation that allow you to "uninstall" the SP1 RC1 update, then you will understand that when you go to update your PC later with the full release, you will first uninstall RC1 then update to the real SP1.

Thoughts: It functions better (file copies, fixes Sharepoint 3.0 issue though not the Sharepoint 2.0 issue with Webdav.dll file), though I don't know how worth it is to update it for two hours then have to uninstall it later and do the whole thing over again. It's causing me grief with my old Sharepoint 2.0, not letting me submit forms via InfoPath, and any forms on the site open as read only, all thanks to the Webdev.dll file. Microsofts ploy to get you to go to the new 3.0 which it does pass through credentials properly.

avatarIts still very annoying

That it plasters

"Windows Vista (TM)
Evaluation copy. Build 6001"

on my desktop with out prior warring that it would do so kind of pisses me off to tell the truth. I beta tested SP2 for Windows XP and never ran into this.
I know I am running the SP1 RC Beta and don't need to be reminded about it every time I look at my desk top for the next two or three months. It gets very annoying really quick. I tried disabling it with Vista Manager (a tweak program) with no effect. Does anyone know how to disable it?
A search of The Microsoft Knowledge Base came up with nothing.

avatarFailed to install

I can't figure out what I am doing wrong or why SP1 won't install. It reboots my computer and gets 97% through step one and fails.

It then starts to uninstall everything it just did, reboot and try again. It does this two or three times then gives up and goes back into Windows saying it couldn't install.

I ran the registry key file to enable SP1 through auto update and downloaded all the other updates it requested before hand. Couldn't find any of the KB articles that were talked about in the SP1 documentation though so maybe they are what I am missing but cant find them.

avatarSome suggestions if you're having problems...

Are you short of disk space on drive C:

If you're down to your last few GB, try freeing up some space before you try the reinstall.

Also, run CHKDSK on C: drive and make sure it's OK before you try the reinstall.

If installing via Windows Update still won't work, download the appropriate full install version.

Keep us posted.

avatarMore than enough space

Yeah, have 100GB left out of a 250GB HD. Ran CHKDSK and it reported no problems.

I tried the full install before I tried Windows Update. Both had the exact same results and error code (which I don't remember off hand but can get when I return home).

Oddly enough both ways it stopped at exactly 97%.

avatarForum

Yeah, checked the forum last night and today. No one has gotten my error code yet I am sure.

All I remember is it has a "B" in the code and no one has posted with such an error code. I will keep checking their forums to see it it pops up but I might just wait till the final release to update.

Thanks for the help!

avatar"Evaluation Copy" is just a reminder to get final SP1

Don't worry about the 'evaluation copy' desktop notification. It's a reminder to you that you're running a pre-release copy of SP1. When SP1 reaches production, uninstall the RC version and install the final version.
