I like the idea of a porn finder but to be used to locate porn on the net. I bet that would become really popular.

avatar

Pablo-man

They actually have that. It's called Google.

is that david in the pic?...he looks strange there.

To say that I am dissapointed would be a little bit of an understatement.  This guide offers very little in the information department.  It would have been better to see a "Best Of" article, where the devices shown here were compared to the devices that didn't get shown here.  For instance, why is the Logitech G19 the top keyboard, especially when the Razer Blackwidow Ultimate just took over the top spot @ MaximumPC via pg 96 of the Holiday 2010 issue of MAXIMUMPC?  I get that it has an LCD screen, but so what?  If that is it's primary set apart feature, then why wasn't the Art Lebedev Optimus Maximus up for most ultimately awesome accessory keyboard?  Every key is an LCD screen, and you can program each one to display whatever you want!

Next, you went for Logitech's wireless headset for the number 1?  Really?  After trying the wired version at a LAN last year (used for 2 solid days of gaming), I couldn't move my head because my neck hurt so bad due to the excessive weight of the headset!  Yeah, the buttons were really useful, but the sound was not all that great, especially if you are skypeing while gaming.  Unless some major upgrade has been found, I simply cannot believe that you put that headset at number 1!

I have some "enthusiast" accessories, however, this article seems like you guys got some extra Christmas cash from a few manufacturers to promote their products.  I hope that I am 100% percent wrong, but this has all the feel of an advertisement.  Am I alone in this?

avatar

TheMurph

Here's the deal -- this isn't a "Best-of" article.  It's based solely on the "cool" factor of the devices present -- which is why I included things like a gaming mousepad or a PSU tester, even though they would likely not walk out the door with a 10-Kick Ass if reviewed by MPC.

The Optimus Maximus wasn't chosen because I don't really care much for a keyboard that's $2,400.  I mean, this is an "accessories you should have" guide.  Not a, "Let's go burn that large stack of cash on our desk for a stupid keyboard" guide.  Just trying to be realistic.

The sound isn't that great for the Logitech headset?  Hm.  Well, we'll have to disagree on that -- my primary criteria for finding a cool pair of 'cans was to get one in that's wireless and packed with features.  And as I mentioned, I found these better to listen to than Creative's WoW-themed solution.

Product promotion?  Come on.  That's exactly why we have a, "devices you shouldn't check out even though they seem cool" in the end.  This is a tested guide to, "must-have PC accessories to pick up for the holiday season that you've probably heard of or been interested in, but always wanted to hear someone else's experience with them."  I don't envision I'll be getting a sack of cash from the companies whose products performed less than admirably.

Guess I took "The Ultimate PC Accessories Guide" a little too literal.  Maybe in the future you should title articles similar to this "The Best Presents For Gamers....."  Or something else a little less broad.

C'mon MaxPC! Live up to your name and review these already! (Razer Orochi mice, Astro A40 headset)

I've been seeing lots of hype on them from various websites and what get's me fired up is these two aren't exactly new and yet MaxPC failed to even mention a word or two about 'em!

...and any sign of MaxPC reviewing some of these in 2011? Most are fairly new but are on my radar for my next build:

Antec LanBoy Air -an extremely modular case

CM Storm Infermo Mouse -a better subsitute for a Razer Naga?

Samsung P2770FH and Viewsonic VX2739WM  -1ms LCD monitors

Samsung PX2370, XL2370 -just coz CNet beats you to it by giving Klipsch S4/S4i high-praise reviews way, way  ahead of you... might as well review these monitors and give it a 9 for another deja vu. LOL, I know.... absolutely makes no sense at all.

...and perhaps a "3D monitor Round-up" (LG W2363D, Acer GD23HZ, Zalman ZM-M240W, Alienware OptX AW2310, Asus VG236H, Samsung 2233RZ, Viewsonic VX2268wm, Viewsonic V3D241wm-LED) with a side column on "2D" gaming. Yep, I'm weird for being ironically interested more for its "2D" gaming but I've always had chronic eyestrain gaming on 72hz below and have always sworn on high-hz gaming which seems to make motion smoother (mostly on twitch shooters or any fast motion games, though 100hz above seems overkill IMO) reminiscent of CRT PC monitor tech beyond low "60-72hz" specs still common on PC LCD monitors today.

TheMurph

Talk to Alex Castle -- he's the guy who can put those on the reviewing radar.  And if I recall correctly, MPC just did a 3D monitor roundup.

I've used the Belkin Nostromo keypads since the N50 (then N52). The N52TE had a LOT of problems with drivers. Also you're paying for something that isn't much better than the N52, except it has pretty lights. I took mine back and got a Logitech G13. It's way better!

avatar

schneider1492

the point of the n52te over the n52 was it didn't need drivers because the macros could be configured and saved on the on-board memory. than you could plug it into any computer and have your custom configuration. it also has more buttons. if you want to talk driver nightmare i spent weeks trying to get my n50 working correctly on x64 before i gave up.

The only thing on your list that would make my cut is the Antec power supply tester. I can't see wasting the money on any of the other "toys" discussed. I guess the recession has made me much more frugal these days.

avatar

Danthrax66

Yeah even the g930's which seem like a good idea are kind of bad since they use 2.4ghz wireless and will just add more clutter to that spectrum.

avatar

Morpheous416

David, one of the things that make this site so great to come to for advice and knowledge, are not only the break downs and handy reviews, but the amount of information given in them!

Ya kinda missed one important item that most other (if not all) articles have when it comes to this subject.

Prices!!

You mentioned getting out our cards or cash, but failed to mention to open up other tabs so that we could search the net for the prices!

avatar

TheMurph

Sorry.  Here's the reason why I don't include prices: MSRPs aren't very realistic when it comes to figuring out the actual price a given retailer might charge for an item.  But to determine the latter, I'd have to pick a retailer and list said company's prices, and I don't want to give undue weight or influence to Newegg over Amazon, or Thinkgeek, or whomever.

avatar

schneider1492

its understandable, and a good business practice to not show favoritism, i was surprised by the fact that lots of reviews and BoB on this site link to Newegg. Even more so to see ads by doubleclick.net who are notorious for tracking cookies.

avatar

lhatten

I know it is a real pain to have to open a new tab and search for something but really!!

The Antec Digital PSU Power Tester is $36 & change at Amazon out the door.

The Corsair Flash Padlock 2 8 GB is $49 & change out the door, and the 16 GB is $81 & change out the door.

Perhaps you could have your mommy look it up for you next time.

avatar

FunkySquirrel

Yes, let's do that, because clearly, expecting the website of a magazine named MAXIMUM PC to do the kind of legwork even sites like Good Housekeeping and Better Homes and Gardens's websites do, and actually linking to other things on the web, is folly.  Sheer folly.

But perhaps you can show us the way.  Your first task: learning how to freaking spell GOOGLE.

JohnP

Sure looks like a slab of UHMW (Ultra High Density Molecular Weight) plastic to me, including the reason why some mice do not like the translucent surface. That is the same stuff that makes up the bottom mouse pads. Terrific surface and easy to keep clean. Except go to EBay or other stores and just buy yourself a 1/8-1/4 inch thick, 8 by 11 to 12 by 12 inch piece. Works a treat and cost a third as much.

avatar

Danthrax66

No it is silicon, and it is over-priced nonsense. Most of the "pro" gamers just use the Steelseries QCK+ because it has a really great texture. I use the QCK Heavy because it is more pad. Definitely better than any razer mousepad I've ever owned.
