Speaker Sparring: Two 2.1 Speaker Systems Go Head-To-Head

Wanted to upgrade from my five year old Logitech Z-2300, so bought the Corsairs SP2500. They cost me $260 which is a lot of money for a 2.1 computer speakers.

Assuming that my older Z-2300 costs $110, the performance benifit is NOTHING. Of course it has a lot of gizmos, lcd screen & DSP. But I am quite an old man, all that I love is sound quality & nothing else. And sound quality wise my personal view is Z-2300 is better than SP2500.

Comparing to my old Z-2300, the SP2500 satellites are bright but at the same time more hollow. They are also quite painful to hear for a sustained period. Z-2300 satellites are more smooth & does not strain my ears at the same volume. Even though SP2500 have separate midrange & tweeters(one of the main reasons why I bought these) they definitely sounded more empty to me than the Z-2300.

For example in a chorus track, I can hear some voices while the rest of the voices are muted while the sound seemed harsh. Playing the same track on Z-2300 the sound is much more pleasant to hear & also I can hear all the voices. I tried every equalizer setting from the control pod of SP2500, nothing helped. Every preset equalizer accentuates some frequencies & drop other frequencies. So, you never get what you want.

Comparing the base between the two, SP2500 goes a little bit deeper than Z-2300 but is much less defined than Z-2300. Compared to SP2500 base Z-2300 seems to be a bit lousy, but the kind of music I manly hear are classical, pop, jazz, instrumental the Z-2300 seems to produce more accurate & natural base than SP2500. Maybe the youngsters with a lot of techno & hip hop love the SP2500 base, but they are definitely not my taste. I love acoustic base and not techno base.

Also the volume knob is very disturbing & unpredictable. The volume goes up & down by preset discrete levels in bars. They are definitely going back and according to me is not even worth the $260 price tag. I am quite depressed since only after reading the review from MaximumPC I went to buy the SP2500. I think I have to go for some bookshelves now.

My question to Tony is do you have a good sound card or did you use it with onboard. Sounds like the latter or you just didn`t have something adjusted right.

I bought these which replaced my Klipsch 2.1`s I`ve had for many years. The Klipsch are still a favorite of mine. I loved them and they sound great and are still a recommendation in my book. But as mentioned in other reviews for the SP2500`s, you hear sounds and instruments you didn`t hear before. It`s just an awesome sounding set of speakers and I heartily recommend them. Just make sure you have a good sound card and appropriate EQ setting for your choice of music. In gaming, all I say is just wow. The sounds are so much clearer. You hear city/jungle sounds you never heard with the Klipsch`s. Trust me, these are great sounding speakers.

If you want a comparison, look at an HD LCD TV. Hook it up to a regular satellite/cable feed and it`s a decent picture. Order your HD signal, and it`s ZOMG WOW! Now do you get the reference for the SP 2500`s? You pair it with an excellent source and your music and gaming goes to new levels. It`ll do a good job with onboard but do yourself a favor and pair it with a good sound card.

that's ironic: corsair is known for great cases, and they make the shell of the subwoofer to thin.

I've bought two sets of Logitech speakers in the last few years and both have been pretty terrible. I've learned my lesson now. Actually, the joysticks I've bought from them have also been really crappy too. A shame, since their keyboard that I'm using is the best one I've ever had and I like their mice, too.

I don't use my speakers much, so I don't want to put down a lot of money for something high end. Space is a concern, so I don't even want a subwoofer. The speakers I'm using now have a line in jack for mp3 players, which is pretty useful, too. Too bad they're terrible in every other way. The longest lasting speakers I had were some might-as-well-be-noname brand I bought with my first PC. They did perfectly decent job for over a decade.

End rambling.

Not to nitpick, but does antec build ANY aluminum cases?  Pretty sure they are all steel.  Ah nvm, Newegg says the P193/183 are steel/plastic/aluminum...
