Rip, Watch and Organize Everything: The Ultimate Media Guide

Had to really search to find how to really set up and use EAC for FLAC. No help, no links from article.

Now, having been convinced to go lossless, I have spent hours and hours trying to find out how to use these files in Windows Media Player 12 and the Windows Media Center in Win7 64, with nothing but frustration. There is so much gibberish on the net, and half-baked guides, half-working tag add-ins and totally dweebed out impossible to understand codecs, I am lost. Mad Flac, Shark7, the numberous tag programs all leave one without a seemingly simple job done. I just want the flac files to show up properly in WMP, with art, and then in Media Center so I can use my HTPC I have worked on for some time.

What is needed is the rest of the story as to how to get that job done; preferably by not spending $40 to get some program that has the flaws.

I have been able to play the files fine, but trying to put them in WMP results in half of them coming back as unknown album, or then an album with every song in it twice, no art, no way to fix them, unable to even find if I have the latest version of the codec or not, etc. etc.

This article is mostly a tease unless you have already done all of this.

Sorry to vent, but this is not the thorough job I expect from MPC, with the ability to have the experts guide us the rest of the way through to the final destination, like an HTPC that they always promote.

Just found out about this free program and I started using it today - while reading your article. Its called Freemake Video Converter.  It seems simple to use, but I have no experience with it yet.

My level of excitement at seeing the title of this article in the latest edition of Maximum PC was exceeded only by my disappointment at discovering that the one topic I was interested in was not covered in this "Almost Ultimate Guide."

How do I make a permanent copy on my harddisk of streaming media from the Web?

Excellent article! I'd just like to add that I've found the Bulk Rename Utility to be a great tool in helping organize my media. It's available at http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Download.php

Anyone heard about you cannot have enough backup.. well discs don't last forever, and they can be damaged.  IF I rent or buy a DVD or BR movie.. and decide to copy the movie to hdd for backup.. or to transfer a copy to a mobile device or PC elsewhere.. that is my business.   Everyone deserves to get paid for their work and nothing is free; BUT, the studio's should charge what they need to charge up front, including when they sell rights to Netflix to stream on the internet.   Right now Hollywood is greedy and trying to milk the movie system of all the cash they can, just like the cell phone companies charging the most with the worst service in the world to the point where America is what 28th in the World for broadband service.   Ridiculous.   For those who buy a movie; then make copies to sell to make money w/o the producers being paid.. Hammer them.  The real criminals go unpunished, like a major jazz concert put on by/ in City of StPetersburg, FL.. with several tents Vendors selling Pirated copies including color copy of covers.   Video $10  CD $5.   Police everywhere with no concern.   No point in arresting someone who will spend no time in jail and be on the street before the police paperwork is done.

Footnote:  having dozens of video and audio standards is nuts, and just another method of making it difficult and milking the business.

For ripping TV show DVDs, I use DVD Decrypter to rip the content from the discs. It has a handy feature that lets you view the content of the disc in IFO mode, so that each episode on the disc is a separate item you can select. Once I have ripped everything off the discs, I use AutoGK to convert them to Xvid AVIs. I love AutoGK because it lets me select the size in megabytes I want the finished file to be, and it is always very close.

If I am ripping a DVD of cartoons, like the Looney tunes golden Collection, I go a different route. I use MakeMKV to make MKV files of each cartoon on the disc. I then take those KMV files and use Winnydows' Xvid4PSP program because it has x264 settings specifically for animation. A slight bump up in saturation along with the x264 setting of HQ Ultra Animation, and instead of having videos that would take up about 24 gigs for a three-disc set in MKV format, I get beautiful videos that take up about a third of that space, and often look better than the MKVs.

As usual, MaximumPC gives us another great article on using great programs to rip, archive and burn our favorite media (CD, DVD-Video, Blu-ray, etc...)

But does anyone know of any great programs (paid or free) that can rip and burn 5.1 Surround-Sound DVD-Audio, DTS-CD and Super-Adio CD (SACD) discs...?

These discs are amazing... They can do much more than just play music...

They can have songs in 5.1 Surround-Sound, songs in PCM Stereo, Music Videos, Lyrics, Credits, Biographies, Disc Album Art, Individual Song Art (sometimes rotating), 5.1 Surround-Sound Set-Up Demos, Music Time-Lines, and more...

I know, these discs are EXTREMELY rare, and in most cases, EXTREMELY expensive... And available artists BLOWS big time...

But if ANYONE knows of any good programs that can Rip, and Burn these great disc, please let us know... We'd love to be able to make great compilation discs of OUR favorite songs too... Just in 5.1 Surround-Sound...

Thank You

So you don't have to be at a computer to read the articles. The webcam article and AV article was online before I got the current issue.

One thing that is critical with using the Pogoplug via Internet is your ISP plan's upload rate. Lower tier DSL (like I have) may not be enough. I have a T1 connection at work that is hobbled by my poor upload rate. It takes about 2 hours to download a 30-minute TV show from my home hard drive (attached to Pogoplug) so that I can watch it on work computer. Live streaming is impossible. While this is great in a pinch, it's far from ideal. Access to home data drive is worth it and downloading from work to home drive is speedier. The Pogoplug is great but just don't expect miracles if you're don't have high level DSL, cable, or fiber-optic. By the way, using Pogoplug at home to wirelessly access the drive's media (through it's iPod app and PC app) works much better.

Your comment about ID3 tags is well-taken but it's been a constant problem for me because I record a lot of music from various sources. Doing this means hand-entered metadata which is a pain. Have tried Media Monkey but it's not very helpful. Anyone know of a good tagger for recorded music? Of course I know the title would need to be entered exactly and possibly the artist but most often I have no idea of album, date, etc. I'd like to be able to manually enter as little other info. as possible and have it supplied by a program.

I use Nero recode to make mp4 avc lets have more control on bit rate, resolution and boost volume of audio. There lot of blu ray with multiple m2ts make up of movie and transcoding m2ts take along time and be faster if you did with DVD if your making digtal copy for portable device.

Nice article! Really liked the lossless alternatives presented.

But I would recommend anyone trying to stream their library of media over the internet to check out subsonic. It does live transcodes of both audio and video, is available for pretty much any OS and has mobile apps for android, iOS and win phone 7. It's also very very cheap on the wallet.

First, are you going to print this exact same info every year?  This is the same article from last year.

Tha being said, I get audio out of sync no matter which program I use, what can be done to insure the delay is correct?

Thanx jbitzer

it is the same article, every year, nothing really changes.

There are so many other apps to use for each project, but

they never use any of them.

Ive got atleast 6 of these yearly articles.WTF?

As far as your sync issue, make sure to not play with other

stuff in the background and dont use the fastest speed. Ive

had no issues with Handbreak. Best of Luck!
