The retail version and the RTM version are the same thing (if I'm not mistaken). OEM's get it early because they have to get the new PC's ready, etc...

I've had Win 7 RC running on 3 computers in my house since it was released, in addition to a Win XP machine and a Vista machine.  Vista sucked from day 1, not only due to the various driver issues but the number of BSOD's I've seen.  The BSODs were at least once a week until SP1, then went down, though they still occur on occasion.  I saw 3 BSOD's in XP in the last 7 years.  Win 7 does seem better than Vista, however I've encountered two key issues with it.  One: The machine I primarily use freezes about 1-2 times a week, requiring a hard reboot.  There is no pattern, rhyme, or reason to when it happens that I can tell.  It's possible that it is a driver issue, but I haven't been able to nail down the cause.  Two: When I set up the 3 Win 7 machines, I set up the homegroup from my primary machine and the other 2 joined the homegroup.  All was fine initially, but then one machine stopped seeing the homegroup and couldn't rejoin it at all.  The same thing happened to the second machine about a week later.  Then my primary machine didn't see itself in the homegroup.  Through the Network Center, I could "join" a homegroup, but attempting that didn't work.  I've since had 2 of the machines (my primary included) alternately see themselves as"joined" to the homegroup, then not, then joined again.  There is some bug in there that hasn't been resolved.

So far so good. But remember, in comparism to the number of PC users, the evaluation group is very small. Until a final release to the masses, and some long term use, we can only guess that 7 looks and works good. Early reports are that it is performing up to par.  I have been playing with 7 for awhile. Overall I like it. Takes some getting use to as far as the interface and where things are. I did have some networking issues and driver issues. My XP machine can't see my 7 machine, but my 7 machine can see my XP machine. Several programs that worked on XP did not work on 7. I'm sure in time this will all be worked out (SP1). I never fully migrated to Vista. I ended up going back to XP. So if 7 can be XP and more, I'm happy. Vista certainly became another Windows ME. 7 is definitely better than Vista. But, keep in mind....only time will tell.

That's great to hear! Looking forward to getting my hands on my Home Premium pre-order... Two and a half months seems so far away though...

I'm extremely satisfied with Win7 after using the RC for a few months. For me, it took a bit to get used to the new explorer coming from XP, but now it's great. I did run into a problem though. The version of the RC I have will not run Starcraft! I'm sure there's a fix somewhere but I didn't bother looking.

Every single preview of 7 needs to admit to one thing...the only reason 7 is so good RIGHT NOW...is because of Vista. Vista paved the way & worked out the kinks that might have plagued 7 . Driver support, transfer speed, UI, ...all thanks to Vista. If 7 would have been released back in 2007, the EXACT same problems that hurt Vista would be present in 7. In fact, I honestly think the only reason 7 is being released now is because of all the FUD that was spread about Vista. All these "improvements" should have been added to Vista in a service pack, but thanks to all the bias & shock hungry media, people are scared of using Vista.
I am honestly sick of media bashing Vista & calling it trash & suck, & fail, needing "redemption". Vista with service pack 1 & 2 is a great os. XP prior to sp.2 was HORRIBLE. I find it laughable that people expect a modern os to run on antiquated hardware. I have said it here before: Vista sp1 will run perfectly smooth on a low end dual core, 2 gigs of ram(btw which should be standard thanks to modern programs, such as photoshop, not because of the os)& integrated graphics. I have built many low end systems that take full advantage of Vista's Aero interface with no slowdowns or hitches.
You all suck.

it is ok to believe that what you own is the best.

we understand.

perhaps you could explain the benchmarks it didn't look to me, i could be wrong, that vista with all its glorious service packs did as well as xp.

i probably missed something

I am not saying it is the best...I am saying it is not as bad as the crappy media says it is. Even in this article it manages to get in a few cheap swipes at Vista. What I I saying is this: 7 owes its success to Vista.

Yup, Vista is now a good OS after all the patches and such. Even my mom thinks that Vista sucks, even though she doesn't know why, she just hears it from people.

Once something gets a bad reputation, it is nearly impossible to repair it. Vista will always "suck." Even though Microsoft fixed almost everything, Vista will still "suck" because when it first launched, all of the mainstream media that non geeks listen to said it sucks.

Hopefully they said "Vista sucks" and not "Windows sucks," otherwise, there are going to be quite a few Mac users in a couple of years.

And Mac fanboys piss me off.

I admit that when Vista first came out is was a clunker, but now with SP2 it runs great! I torture it with heavy renders using high-end 3D packages and I also run the Abobe Master Collection, and all of that heavy software runs solid. I may wait for Windows 7 SP1 before I jump into the new OS, because right now all of my software plays nice and runs great in Vista 64.

i believe windows 7 will be an OS where you wont have to wait for sp1 to expect reliability. it's gone through such a broad and open beta testing process that i am sure you wont have any issue with the OS itself. drivers will all be up to par, due to vista. and any program that runs in vista should run the same if not faster in 7.

my biggest issue i ran into recently was trying to network with a mac running os x tiger. i got it working eventually but it should have been easier.

Unlike some of the comments i've read negatively giving poor feedback on this OS - i'd have to say it must be you.  I have been using 7 since beta and have been pleasantly using RC1 for a while now flawlessly.  In fact I have it dual boxed on both my rigs and like it better than Vista which is surprising since Vista hasn't really been much of a issue for me and I've been using it since its RC days.  Vista at first sucked badly and I touted it as one of the worst OS launches ever but improvements made it more than just a workable OS, its fast and secure.

Windows 7 so far in the RC stage is far more stable than any OS I've used and it is a lot quicker.   The lack of items such as Windows mail, photo gallery and movie maker is no big deal.  Thunderbird is much nicer than windows mail and firefox is a better browser than IE8.  For those that hate office 07, well use Openoffice.org.. Its FREE and its damn near identical to Microsoft office.  Running this OS in RC as stable and fast as it is I find it very hard to believe there will be any mainstream problems.  For everything hardware that I use is working fine with vista and continues to perform the same if not better on windows 7.  The only thing that I currently own which is mainly a XP built item is my printer and it to is just barely a pre vista printer but it works just fine with both platforms.  So, like a few people on here have mentioned if you're complaining about hardware compatibilities either your crap is to old or you haven't downloaded the latest drivers.  XP user boasting they'll never use windows 7 over XP know this, Microsoft will stop supporting XP sooner rather than later and when they do, vendors will stop writing drivers and code for it.  I like XP to, but its end is near, after almost 10 years its been around long enough!

It IS goofy to say Win7 has awesome wall papers. Wake up guys. Am I reading some sorry Apple magazine or PC Mag which miserably failed? I do hope you keep the awesomeness. I am afraid you guys are losing it.
