"Significantly faster" than a conventional HDD?  Not by those read and write numbers.

Something tells me you guys missed the boat on this product review.  Go check out Canucks, Storage Review or others.  They are reporting functional numbers "significantly" higher than yours.  Hell, my standard Momentus 7200, much less my Momentus XT first gen scream faster than your results.

What gives?

As per the article: "On the raw disk level, the Momentus XT 750GB is identical to a standard Momentus 750GB drive, as borne out by low-level benchmarks like HDTune. The adaptive algorithm shows its worth in real-world benchmarks and tests, such as PCMark Vantage’s HDD subtest and PCMark 7’s secondary storage suite."

Someone told you "low level" and you got excited.  HD Tune is just Coretest renamed and gussied up.

You guys should be ashamed of yourselves even using that.  A Momentus XT 750 should be markedly faster on "raw" tests that mimic off-disc-data rates compared to the standard 750.  Something is amiss with your setup.  I'd go check that...

I don't think you and I are speaking the same language. The mechanical part of the Momentus XT is identical to a standard Momentus, so why would it have different raw disc speeds? I included HDTune to point that out. The performance difference comes in applications that are allowed to cache to NAND, which HDTune doesn't measure but benchmarks like PCMark do.

NEd,

I wasn't contesting the real-world (simulated) performance metrics.

Who told you that a Momentus 750 and 750 XT had the exact same disk to buffer performance?

Was it in your press release/sample package?

Something is amiss.  I would try a different utility that turns off caching.  HD Tune is coretest a$$.

Those are numbers I got from testing a Momentus 750 and 750 XT on the same system with the same settings. Not sure what else to tell you.

The words in your summing up of the review under the "Momentous" and "Meaningless" had so much depth and wonder it filled me with awe at this drive. It has more, it has less. Shakespeare-grade wordcrafting, thats what it is.

Bravo, Nathan.
