The Nokia n900 has very similar specs, and it came out nearly a year ago.

Not just that, but the n900's Maemo Linux OS will run pretty much anything that runs on Debian/Ubuntu!

avatar

tapple

Because the N900 runs a 600mhz CPU, is really really thick, and (just like the HD2) has a boring and/or terrible OS holding it back.

It's funny and a little bit sad that the writers have been conditioned to apologize to their audience before writing any article dealing with apple products.

Not that I am an apple fan, but I do like to know whats going on in the other camp. Those that don't want to read apple articles can just skip over them. But, as the saying goes, "Know thy enemy." If for no other reason than to have solid arguments when you are pwning the apple fanboys with your knowledge at the copy machine.

"We try to keep our Apple coverage to a minimum, as we know that it's not
the favorite company of most of our readers."

Not the favorite company is an understatement

"That’s why you generally won’t see a review of a new MacBook or iMac on
this site even though these machines are, for all intents and purposes,
personal computers."

We all know it's true but why don't you go post that over on your sister site Mac Life and see what kind of response you get? And speaking of Mac Life, if these abominations are essentially a PC, then why is there never any coverage of anything other than Apple or Apple based accessories over there?

I just get so mad because the cult of Steve offers no equal relationship with its brethren over here in the "free world".

Side by side comparisons aside, articles dedicated to all things Apple can kiss it...

avatar

TheMurph

Wow.  And i thought the comments to my "I love Apple" articles were bad enough...

Seriously though.  it's a freakin' product.   I will never get the blind scorn some people attach to a company when the same people are undoubtedly running an operating system that, guess what, is just as blessed with shady business practices as anything else.  :D

But I'm just hypothesizing.  Here's the deal: technology is cool.  Can't we all just hold hands and be happy about any new product?

Couldn't have said it better myself.  No matter how much I dislike Jobs and his cultish fanboys, this is one badass phone.  I was particularly blown away by the screen res, I never expected that much of an upgrade.  I swear, some of the people on this site are just as bad as the people over at MacLife when it comes to fanboyism.  Learn to appreciate the iPhone 4 for the incredible hardware it is, regardless of the Apple stigma affixed to it.

You miss the point if you think those of us complaining here are fanboys. I'd consider us more haters than any sort of fanboys. I don't forget easily and Apple has really left a terrible taste in my mouth. I tried Apple once, I bought a 5th gen iPod (still use it). Then I caught on when they upgraded the 5th gen just enough to make the original "obsolete" and unable to dl movies from iTunes unless I shelled out money and upgraded to an iPod "Classic". I caught on real quick. At that moment I saw how Apple treats their fold and I didn't buy in.  I get movies on it just fine (dvd fab) but I had no reason to buy a new classic or a touch and felt cheated.  Fool me once.....

Apple is their own entity. They are the ones that have chosen to be the elite minority. I just want to help them stay that way. This is an ages old argument here...

Bill Gates should have never bailed Apple out back in the late 90's.

Oh and for Steve Jobs to tell all of his followers "Just don't hold the phone that way" and you iPhone 4 lovers to just say "okay, thanks!"... Now that just hurts my heart.  That alone, proves my point .  God has spoken and his words are, "Your doing it wrong!"

avatar

TheMurph

OK.  You bought an Apple product once and you didn't like it.  So... you universally hate anything the company makes now?

I sure hope you never ran a copy of Windows ME...

avatar

BuLLg0d

"I sure hope you never ran a copy of Windows ME."

Yeah, I pirated a copy and it sucked. I legitimately supported 16, K-12 school labs running OS9 though. That was a worse experience by far.

avatar

BuLLg0d

No,

I am over 35 years old and have lived through the history of the PC VS Mac and I'm tired of seeing young journalists giving in to the luster and Appeal of the forbidden fruit. Steve Jobs is a jerk and thinks he floats above the ground, his followers think he floats above the ground too and I'm sick of it stinking up my magazine/webzine.

I shared my frustration over the 5g iPod as a point of argument, not THE point of argument. Having to pull from the history books is something I honestly didn't think I would have to do. Its uncommon knowledge, or should be, why this is an oil and water situation and you all, as journalists, should understand the path that brings us here.

You can argue with me all you want, I have more ammunition. This is decades worth of hate dude. Anyone else want to chime in here? I'm just getting started.

avatar

TechJunkie

I'm with you man. SJ is a tech evangalist that has followers that will do anything he says...just because he says so. I'm 38 and also have been through all this before and nothing you have said has been incorrect. As far as an apple article here and there won't bother me too much as I will skip over it. But when you have 3 in a row on a PC tech site, that's a little obsurd.

Murph, you claim that apple is technology and your just reporting the tech. Fine. But what you don't realize is that most apple products are not compatible with a PC. The only products/software that do work on a PC, are ONLY for apple products only -- ipod, ipad, iphone, itoaster, iballscratcher, etc. Fine also. But keep it where it belongs and that's on an apple site. If they made stand alone hardware/software for the PC (that are useful without an actual apple product) Then by all means write it. So far, thier tech is only for thier tech. If they made the retina display for other manufacturers such as HTC, Samsung, Motorola....then you would have a valid point. But until then, nope.

I have to PooP!

TheMurph

"But what you don't realize is that most apple products are not compatible with a PC. The only products/software that do work on a PC, are ONLY for apple products only -- ipod, ipad, iphone, itoaster, iballscratcher, etc."

Okay.  And a number of Windows products don't work on Linux, but Maximum PC still talks about that?

I mean, I'm not trying to belittle your argument.  I'm just saying that technology is technology -- you're coming at it from the perspective of a Windows vs. Apple war.  That's all well and good, but it's kind of silly to hate on a company's new technological achievements just because they don't work with other platforms.  I don't really care of iWork can be installed on Windows 7 or not if Apple's iPhone is a best-in-market device, you know?

avatar

BETAnut

the bigger problem with the "Okay. And a number of Windows products don't work on Linux, but Maximum PC still talks about that?" is that a skilled pc user will find a way to use them, most apple fanboys are ignorant morons paying top dollar for yesterdays trash. you can install windows on a mac relatively painlessly, now try to install mac os on a pc, you hit a brick wall of no from the jobs. your simply bashing the apple vs. pc war on the simple fact that its tech? people prolong this war based on bias and fact, tech has nothing to do with it. after all, where are all the android reviews??????

avatar

TheMurph

"most apple fanboys are ignorant morons paying top dollar for yesterdays trash"

Which has absolutely nothing to do with the strengths or weaknesses of a company's products.

As I've mentioned, I don't really care whether I can run OSX on my Windows PC so long as whatever Apple product I happen to be purchasing makes the best sense for my own lifestyle.  There are many who share this concern; there are not quite as many that care about porting apps between two completely different operating systems.

Here's a question: Do you hate Adobe and it's proprietary lock on Web content?  If so, are you going to tell Google what a bunch of jerks they are for embedding Flash into Chrome now, and will you never buy an Android phone because of that?  Same logic.

avatar

BETAnut

everything apple makes has a better alternative, which makes this statement "so long as whatever Apple product I happen to be purchasing makes the best sense for my own lifestyle." invalid.

the mass of apples sucess is the blind migration of idiots who feel that they are getting a better product just because it was produced by apple.

the only thing that apple does better than most people is advertise. period.

avatar

carnivorousslushee23

Sorry, but you seem to have missed my point as well as the Murph's.  We were saying put aside the Apple hate for a minute - just a MINUTE - and consider the iPhone 4 purely from a hardware perspective.  As he said, technology is cool.  So you've had a bad experience with Apple; haven't we all?  We all know what a douche Jobs is, and we're not trying to make you buy this phone.  I wouldn't mind if Apple went out of business myself.  Just appreciate it from a technological perspective rather than your bad experiences with this company.  It's about the hardware right now.

As for MacLife, just because they're arrogant twits about their personal demigod and his shiny products doesn't mean Maximum PC has to adopt the same attitude they do; then they'd be just as bad as MacLife.  There's a reason they're called "MacLife" - they concentrate on Macs, whereas Maximum PC is about...PCs, which include Macs as well as Windows/Linux machines.  Be grateful for all of the great reviews, articles, and podcasts that Maximum PC has provided for your viewing and listening pleasure, and stop spewing this whiny crap at the writers for posting a measly three articles in a row.  I think they've demonstrated quite thoroughly their personal disdain for Apple's business practices over the years; you need to accept the fact that Apple does, indeed, do some things very well.  It's just that they're not very considerate of their customers.

If you want to project your Apple hatred, then go over and do it on MacLife.  You'll likely catch shit for it from the (very) numerous Apple assholes over there, but at least it'll be directed at the right people.  Chill out already.

avatar

BuLLg0d

Now if I went over to Mac Life just to project Apple hatred I would be trolling and that's not the point. Also, I don't expect MaxPC to not cover Apple, just not so much of it and when they do keep it at a base level like they've always done.

I'm tired of the Pro Apple rhetoric here, as are a lot of other people. I'll in fight as much as it takes to steer things back in the right direction.  I only have ONE complaint and it's the Apple love fest that's cropped up. Review a phone, Apple, Motorola, LG, HTC, then move on.  Shoving a half a page worth of Apple reviews down my throat in a day is a bit much. It's like having Vuvuzela's blown in my ear.

avatar

TheMurph

"It's like having Vuvuzela's blown in my ear."

There's an app for that...

avatar

BuLLg0d

Yeah, I read your submission on it.  Instead of downloading that app, I'm just leaving this dead horse of an argument behind.

avatar

aviaggio

I usually have very few issues with the products themselves. It's the attitude of Apple, Jobs, and the rabid fanbois that I can't stomach. I used to work in a hybrid Mac/PC environment and worked well on each platform. But try reading a Mac-centric magazine and it absolutely infuriates me. The spite you see here is nothing compared to their vitriol for us -- which makes it all that more laughable because we clearly have the better product ;)

avatar

BuLLg0d

"But I'm just hypothesizing.  Here's the deal: technology is cool.  Can't
we all just hold hands and be happy about any new product?"

Nope!

For the record and if memory serves me correct Apple and most of its fanbase loathe the PC and think it beneath them.

In a perfect world,  Apple users would "wake up" and find they've been overcharged, over marketed, and live in a world of make-believe.

I'm not pro anything but I liked this place because it was anti Apple for the most part. If this stuff creeps into my magazine I'm dropping my subscription.

"For the record and if memory serves me correct Apple and most of its fanbase loathe the PC and think it beneath them."

So?  If I don't like Microsoft, are we going to be blood enemies too?  :\

avatar

BuLLg0d

Who said anything about Microsoft? You did, not me. But, since you brought it up, Microsoft has shoved some pretty crappy stuff down our throats which only argues my case all the more as to why we don't need to bring Apple into the mix.  Maximum PC has always been known for anti MS alternatives, third-party work around's, alternate OS's, and the best accessories to make my PC based experience better. MaxPC's also helped , in the past, make Windows better, dual-boot to Linux and Windows, and other PC relevant articles/work around's/OS modifications, etc....

As far as blood enemies, not liking Microsoft is a plus. My argument the whole time has been about defending the integrity of the PC. Not the Operating system within it.  Bill Gates is not on my Christmas card list dude.  Thinking this is purely an Apple VS Microsoft rant I've been on, yeah, you are off my list too. Although MS is much more relevant within these pages.

I have to add, Steve Jobs stole from Xerox, Bill Gates stole from Steve Jobs, both underhanded the Big Guy, pirated, software, called it their own, and MS beat Apple to the finish line. The ONLY reason MS won is because they saw past the restrictions of becoming the proprietary hardware/software monster that Apple became.  The only Apple founder I give a pass to is WOZ. He just wanted to breakthrough and make life better for everyone. There's a reason he went out on his own. Disdain for Apple's infighting was part of it. Sure, he kept the stock, I can't blame him for that. I would have too.

Great article. You kept the Apple love to a minimum. And yeah, I'm not gonna switch my cell provider to try out this phone. Android FTW

I love the screenshot of the web browser. Droid FTW!

I'm not a fanboy of anything; but I do have to agree that being locked down in anyway kills a device for me. Half the fun of technology is the being able to muck it up and make it exactly as you want it.

avatar

TheMurph

A fair comment, Cap'n Steve.

I'm satisfied. It's a fair review, unlike some other sites *coughengadgetcough*

avatar

and cmon, "can only run approved apps"?  Only all 100,000 of them?

avatar

aviaggio

It could be a million, but would still suck if the one app you want you can't have for no other reason than Jobs said so. That's the point. Or better, force you into buying one of the paid apps because they won't allow a free alternative.

avatar

austin43

Aaaaand! Cue the PC Fanboy bitching!

avatar

Devo85x

Why not just get the Droid Incredable?

avatar

TheMurph

Well, for one thing, the Incredible is impossible to use in sunlight.  Apple got that one right.

avatar

rlynker

Yes, the AMOLED screen, while superior in so many ways to LCD....does indeed suck hard in bright sunlight.  The question you need to ask yourself is how often will you be in that situation.  I've been trying to figure that out myself.

avatar

tapple

Not true. The Samsung Super AMOLED does as good in sunlight as an LCD. They've compared the Droid Super AMOLED to other OLED displays, and Droid's hold up pretty well. I should know, I own one and use it outdoors often.

avatar

TheMurph

OK, you have to be kidding me on this one.  I can barely see the screen of the Incredible in the sunlight; there is no way that phone works outdoors unless you're standing under a tree.  A tree made of black holes.

avatar

Devo85x

But with AT&T isn't the iPhone imposable to use anywhere? JK =]

avatar

Glycerin

yeah, screw Apple. I'll stick with Verizon and REAL PC's :)
