I don't think FRAPS is really worth paying for. I've tried nearly every recording software out there and have come to find OBS (Open Broadcaster Software, designed for livestreamers) can make the best high quality local recordings. With a little power user tinkering, you can get it to record at the same quality of FRAPS or better, and produce much smaller file sizes since they're compressed on-the-fly with x264.

It's customizable, it doesn't thrash your hard drive, and best of all, it's free.

If I wanted to spend some dough, I'd probably go with Dxtory, which has tons of options, is able to use multiple recording codecs, and it costs less than FRAPS at $35.
