I also use Google reader and if I miss a day I will easily have over 1000 unread items.

Same here, although I have way more than 30. It's overwhelming at times, and number of items can pretty easily go over 1000 if left alone for a whole day, but the key is realizing you'll never read everything anyways, and not be afraid to hit the "Mark all as read" button. If it's important enough, you'll see it again sooner or later.

Check out postrank, then!  You might find it quite useful.

Did you forget about Windows 7 gadgets? There's a few good RSS readers out there (and quite a few crappy ones), but I think Hermes is one of the best. http://is.gd/aGT0TV

It's not perfect, and a little tricky to set up just the way you like it, but I get all of my daily news with it... including Max PC.

I use Google reader for reading this site's feed as well as about 30 others.

Edit: Plus, I use the keyboard shortcuts, and I'm using list view, so a quick glance over my less important and/or less active feeds to see if anything jumps out, and then marking it all as read, takes just seconds.
