I ran out of podcasts so I listened a second time. This time I really appreciated Gordon's rant on Star Trek because I had actually seen the latest alleged ST movie. My neighbors probably think I'm nuts because I was almost rolling around on my deck dying of laughter when Gordon started in on JJ Abrams threatening to bring back JarJar if anyone objected to the lens flare.

I wish you guys would talk about overclocking more. Also a step by step how to over clock an AMD phenom II X6 1100T with a GA-990FXA-UD3 (rev. 1.0) motherboard. Other wise I am of the faithful listener ship and magazine superscribe fellowship. Great Job..

They're not going to bore 99% of their listeners to give a step by step guide for a great but discontinued processor. There are plenty of sites to find guides like that... Here's a link to help you find one... Www.Google.Com

It seems like people (including me) like Gordon ranting for hours.

Therefore, we should petition to have a recording device attached to Gordon all the time, and have automated programs pick out sections with sustained high decibel levels, run it though editing, and then post it as a podcast.

Anyone going to sign this petition? :P

I'll sign that petition; NSA be damned. It's for the good of the people.

Thanks for reading my review on the air, guys. I know you guys are pressed for time, both in terms of the podcast episode length and the strenuous magazine production schedule.

Looking forward to the Dream Machine issue!

I'm always happy to read feedback - thanks for taking the time to leave it!

I'm surprised that you guys had such a biased outlook on the next gen consoles, you can compare the ps4 to an 7870 if you're just looking at specs but you'd be drastically wrong if you think for a moment that you could even compare actual performance. I would think that the good people at maximumpc would understand how efficient consoles are.

You guys didn't even talk about the spec difference of the two as if it was non existence... If the ps4 is a 7870 then the xbone is a 7750/7770 in specs.

This us versus them attitude I'm seeing with some people is incredibly childish, a true tech enthusiast would be excited about any improvements and a true gamer will have more than one platform.

Look who's being incredibly childish, Mr. True Tech And True Gamer Enthusiast. Oh wait, so am I...I DON'T CARE.

But seriously...I question your definitions of 'true' in the contexts you speak. You don't need to force yourself to like every tech/improvement or have more than one platform.

A better question to me in terms of ANY console and platform is, "...but what can it do?" ie. I'm eschewing tech specs in favor of what it actually does; however, bringing that in context with specs can help appreciate the actual function, though there are sometimes disappointments.

Main Point: Don't be a whiner.

avatar

Like you said "specs can help appreciate the actual function". The entire point of the new generation of consoles is the new specs because if it wasn't we'd all stick with the last generation and as it stands the ps4 has way more power under the hood than xbone which is why I'm going with Sony. There are consoles for those who believe that hardware performance is unnecessary and they're called Nintendo Wii.

avatar

thematejka

As they said in the podcast (summary), hardware/performance is not everything. And as I said in the preceding point that you ignored by only quoting its subsequent compliment: "but what does it do?"

What developers will do in the future with the "power under the hood" will dictate how good the console is. There is a big history to draw on of consoles getting better/worse over time. It's time that we need to wait for in order to make a good judgement.

A good case and point is the Wii, which, by the way is not wildly successful because of what its specs are. It took time for it's true capabilities to shine.

avatar

limitbreaker

It's wildly successful for two main reasons (the Wii); one being that it was cheaper and also because of its Wiimote that at the time was a big deal which most got tired of very quickly. I personally didn't buy it because it looked terrible on a 1080p screen and I'll argue that the Wii didn't target the same consumers.

avatar

TheMissingPiece

Well, I suppose they're not looking at it from a gamers' perspective, but more through the hardware enthusiast perspective. I too am excited about how well game devs can take advantage of the (comparatively) massive hardware upgrade, but I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't have as much power as they did. Sure, a 7870's pretty damn fast, but if they're going to expect to stay technologically relevant for the next 5-7 years while gaming at 1080p/4K with constantly improving graphics on the devs' side, it better have the power to do so, and I'm worried that these consoles will start holding gaming back after 4 years.

avatar

thematejka

Agreed. Consoles in the past hold games back eventually, the next ones probably will to. They have difficult decisions to make in the price/performance ratio in terms of who they market to. Generally, they seem to be trying to make things cheap in terms of cost. Of course, advertising, licencing fees, etc., help stem the consumer cost of consoles.

Only listened to the first 15 minutes or so of the MP3 version but did want to warn everyone who hasn't started listening yet that the sound does get a lot better a few minutes into the podcast so just hang in there!! Sound on the video version seems better than the MP3!!

avatar

Block_Dude

I noticed this too.

Josh, what's with the significant cut in quality on the mp3? 32kbps with 22kHz? Extremely rough to listen to, especially on amped setups. May I suggest "-V 6", "-V 7", or even "-V 8" if space is an issue?

We had to use the audio from the GoPro for the first few minutes as there was an issue with the audio from the board. Sorry about that.

avatar

Block_Dude

The entire mp3, not just the first 6 minutes.

avatar

The Mac

yeah, the first few minutes are super muffled, then it clears up and about halfway though Gordon starts stepping on everyone...
