Long time listener, first time commenter.

The Windows/MacBook study you mentioned does indeed sound more BS than objective research, but I'd like to comment on it.

1. I indeed spent $1200 on a MacBook Pro (actually it was closer to $1500) AND bought a separate Windows license to run Windows on it 100% of the time--that is, on startup it boots into Windows (via Boot Camp) without loading a bit of Mac OS.

2. I bought Dells for myself and my family for ten years and my customer experience with the XPS M1330 (and its infamous nVidia 8400 card) caused me to switch. I had the mainboard replaced four times and the BIOS update had the laptop fans running full bore 24/7. The XPS customer service was no help, sending me around and around the same troubleshooting, sending the same service guys to my house to replace the same mainboard, and finally I was at work bitching to my IT department and swearing I'd never buy another Dell again. They told me that pretty much any PC manufacturer was going to give me the same level of support except maybe Apple. I bought a Mac Mini in 2009 and installed Windows XP, then Windows 7 on it. It has never once blue screened and I never boot into Mac OS unless I need to run Boot Camp in order to install Windows. I have since bought a second Mini, a white MacBook and two MacBook Pros. Again, they never ever ever blue screen.

This is not a pro-Apple comment. I hate Apple and its stupid customer service, which has gotten worse over the years (my Mini's optical drive failed twice and I had to make an appointment 80 miles from my house to get it fixed. An appointment! Because their optical drive failed!) but the fact is that people will pay the Apple tax for something reliable that they can count on, and the hardware in the Apple computers is indeed reliable. If PC makers want to foster the kind of blind stupid loyalty that Apple has, they have to stand by their systems in the long run and develop the kind of fandom that has people standing line on launch day for their stuff.

Sadly, those Macs will last a lot longer than I want them to, but that's what I was willing to pay for.

Keep up the great work.

Love the video edition... keep it up.

Regarding voice levels, it would seem a simple mixer where all the mikes feed into, each with their own channel / volume control, it might help solve that... or more simply, 2 channels, one for most, one for tom and just moderate the volume on the mixer to match the other.. ?? maybe??

Keep up the great magazine/web site/podcast!

All they need to do is edit it before released, either manually or with a sound regulator software.

ZX9RDan89

Been listening for a LONG time and I still love it.

The only thing I would ask, kindly. Tom, could you speak up a bit. You are very soft spoken and it is very hard to hear you when Im listening to the podcast in my car. If I turn the volume up, then Gordon blasts my ears...

Keep em coming!!
Dan (My opinion doesn't matter)

ZX9RDan89

Wow! I just read all the other comments and realized that Im redundant.

My opinion still doesn't matter

Matching Video Lights

I'm impressed

you even figured out how to aim the camera at the light to get proper white balance

+1

Next weEK THE SoUnD

avatar

gordonung

Not really. The podcast room oddly had a set of overheads switched off by another department. We added light last time using daytime balanced lighting but there was no way to turn off the non-daylight balanced tubes overhead. For some reason, someone with control fixed the other overhead bank so we have even lighting and the camera is just doing auto white balance for fl. tubes.

avatar

Bullwinkle J Moose

Groovy

Now lie back and set the podcast at a comfortable listening level

Close your eyes

That's it.....

and wait for the clip to come in swearing several times louder than the rest of the podcast

relaxing...isn't it?

what do the neighbors know?

They are probably just jealous that my system can play at those incredulous levels

avatar

TheMissingPiece

Holeeeee crap. Gordon's Rant + Background music = priceless.

avatar

Laharl91

Realistically a 660 isn't enough for 1080p gaming at maximum settings with 60fps minimum. Admittedly it's my opinion and i'm very picky about my fps.

avatar

TheMissingPiece

Maybe not a regular 660, but like Chris, I own a 660 Ti, and that maxes every game at 60 frames. It may dip as low as 45 frames sometimes, but it doesn't get much worse than that.

avatar

Rictus

Please try to work on the volume levels.
some voices are loud and some I can hardly here.
Other then that, keep the videos coming.

avatar

joshnorem

Noted, thanks for the feedback.

avatar

captainjack

agreed. We try to keep the amount of profanity low in my house (I don't care if you curse on the podcast or not it's you prerogative), but it was exasperating when I had to have the volume way up to hear someone and then Gordon's voice blasts through with a loud FUCK!!!!

avatar

Upyourbucket

I don't mind the profanity. If you've got a bunch of dudes in the same room talking shop its only proper to hear salty language. When they stop being themselves that's when there's a problem.

avatar

captainjack

Like I said, I don't mind it either but with kids in the house we try to keep it to a minimum. Normally I would just keep the sound turned down but with the inconsistencies in each person's volume it was impossible to hear some people at low volumes and others (mostly Gordon) were loud at higher volumes. More generally I'm a big fan of podcasts in general and listen to a ton. The MPC podcast has steadily improved in quality since I've been listening. Keep up the good work guys!

avatar

dwellman

Yes. A thousand times yes. I hate having to strain to hear one person and then have tympanic membranes blown put by someone else.

avatar

limitbreaker

I completely agree, i love listening to the MPC podcasts but the volume thing is a huge problem.
There are software's out there to help normalize all volumes :-)

In regards to Gordon's complaint about shutting down win8. Here is a quicker way to shutdown windows without using the charms bar.

Click on the taskbar or desktop to take focus away from any running programs.
Press Alt+F4.
An old style shutdown menu will appear.
I normally just press enter at this point because 'Shutdown' is already selected.

This also works when you are using RDP to a remote computer running win8 or lower and need to reboot that machine. RDP normally hides the shutdown menu.

avatar

maxeeemum

Or you could do it the way I do. Windows key + I brings up the Charmless Settings and click on the Power button. Primitive but it works better than the corner thingy.

"Just deal with it!" LOL!

avatar

Upyourbucket

Gordon is right. Han Solo murdered Greedo for what? Greedo got a raw deal.

Do you have an RSS or ATOM feed for your podcast? I wanna start watching it at the beginning, and am not finding it. I found the extremely limited feedburner website that has a few of them, but I really wanna just set it up to fetch them all, 150 excluded of course.

avatar

joshnorem

There is a link in the description to the RSS feed. Let us know if that works for you.

avatar

aarcane

That's the one that only has like 8 episodes on it, rather than all 200 episodes

avatar

joshnorem

Sorry about that, we'll look into it.

avatar

azuza001

I'd say this is episode 201. Just because you won't release episode 150 doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It just means your trying to save us from the darkness that is 150.

It's like Lucas trying to destroy every copy of the Starwars Christmas Special. He wasn't doing it to be a jerk. He was doing it to save us from the pain and horror that it was.

(By the way, I watched the Xmas special. I was 100% drunk off my ass and it was the most horrible thing I've ever seen. If Alcohol doesn't make it better nothing will)

avatar

Mikey109105

I did better on that slate (the Star Wars Christmas Special, that is). I heard about it, and just knew it couldn't possibly be anything worth my time, and summarily refuse to touch it to this day. Hell freezing over and the planet imploding wouldn't get me to look at it, nor would any amount of money. As for macbook being the best windows laptop, I wish I could agree, but since I've not had the pleasure to use one, I can't really agree or disagree, but for now, I'll leave it to the people who have used it to decide. I think my PC is the top of the world (well OK, not really, I just love my PC) whether it's got outdated hardware or not, so, LOL!

Edit: OK, I apologize, I didn't actually read the entire article, just glanced at it and assumed you named macbook pro as the best. Sorry about that, LOL!
