Um, guys... (tap, tap, tap) You in there?

The Data Doctors' podcast is a nice short-term placebo, but contains all the humor of clipping my toenails. If I don't get my Gordon fix soon I'm gonna need to step up to heroine.

For whatever reason you can't use AmEx or Discover with checkout to buy apps if they're not in US dollars.

You're a bit off on those Canadian bandwidth limit numbers. While it's possible to get a 100gig limit, it's not going to be the typical bandwidth cap for most people.

Looking at Bell.ca, in my area, their highest bandwidth package offered is 75 gigs (53 bucks a month). The most basic is 2gigs (22 bucks a month). These packages additionally offer different speeds and such. One of the reasons for the backlash is that people have been breaking these a lot recently (across all plans), as streaming video, video conferencing, and gaming have become more popular.

Personally, I think I've only ever gone over 100gigs once (Steam sale!), but I also realize that bandwidth is not a finite resource, and hate being gouged. This is a money making venture, and a way to discourage people from using their internet to watch TV (and other content). Which you know, after years of horrible TV services (from the same telecoms), people are turning away from.

I've been using a smaller ISP for the last few years, a plan with a 200gig limit. This was $31.95/month. I will now be switching to a service (with the same ISP) that provides 105gigs a month, at $41.45. I'll have to be careful of that, as if I go over it I'll be charged $1.90 a gig. So yeah, I'll be watching what I buy on Steam. And it helped me make the decision that I won't be getting Netflix, which is pretty new here in Canada.

105gigs is still pretty high and hard to reach, but the internet is always developing and requiring more bandwidth and I want to avoid getting a bill that's three times its normal size just because one month I watch a lot of YouTube, Steam has a sale, and then Windows decides to release a service pack or something. The rest of the internet isn't going to slow down for the Canadians (nor should it) so you can see how the situation could potentally get worse over the years. We all know how gouged we are over cell phone plans, and I don't expect any better with internet usage if telecoms are allowed to decide what is normal usage.

This is an interesting story because so few people fully understand how the internet and bandwidth and caps and speed and congestion all work together. It results in both sides of the argument not really knowing what's going on and/or telling lies. Thank you for covering it.

Oh, and Chewbacca was given a medal at the MTV Movie Awards in '97 (look it up on YouTube). So you're not the only one who was shocked, Gordon.

in response to the podcasting question, this is definetly not the cheapest option, but if you want good quality, try checking out the Rode Podcaster microphone. they have ads on youtube to check out the sound quality. i think they run ~150 bucks a pop.

Me and my friends run a podcast through some cheap 2 channel mixer board, and i think it sounds fine, although we use regular microphones, i.e. musical preformance microphone, by someone like Sure. That mixerboard is powered by usb, and plugs into a pc and we just use audacity.

One  thing you do have to make sure of, if you are recording directly to a pc, you will have to remove the noise with Audacity, which takes all of ten seconds, but it makes the quality a million times better.
