No BS Podcast #117: The Random Nixon Reference Edition
Posted 09/18/09 at 04:30:16 PM by The Maximum PC Staff
We're finishing up an issue of the magazine this week, but still found some time to talk about tech news on the podcast. Topics of discussion include the new Windows 7 commercials featuring Maximum PC, Microsoft's anticipated Zune HD debut, and AMD's $99 Athlon II X4 CPU. Will gives the scoop on the ATI's new Eyefinity videocard technology, which he saw running on an aircraft carrier. This week also features a fruitful listener question and answer segment, which includes one of the episode's many Nixon references. Gordon goes off on Bay Area traffic, and talks about his new phone purchase (no, not an iPhone).

Good CPU Heatsink for Core i5?
Submitted by zerokool on Wed, 09/23/2009 - 7:31pm
With all this talk about core i5 / core i7 what are the best heat sinks for them? I just bought a core i5 and wanted to replace the stock heatsink with something awesome. Any ideas guys? I've been looking at the Thermaltake SpinQ Performance Series and the Zaleman CPNS10x. Both support 1156 socket and they just look cool. Lemme know what you guys think I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.
Zune Software is AWESOME!!!
Submitted by scooter_seh on Wed, 09/23/2009 - 4:37pm
I reason I love the Zune software is that if your videos are in the right format i.e. .mp4 or .wmv it will convert the video to the right size so it will fit on your Zune. Unlike itunes that just gives you an error.

Hey Gordon, if you want to stick with Windows Mobile with Verizon, you should have a look at the HTC Touch Pro2. It's pretty awesome if you're a power user.

Asking for apple to support
Submitted by Khaled on Sat, 09/19/2009 - 3:14am
Asking for apple to support other players is like asking nvidia to have their drivers/physX support ATI.Can we say nvidia has a monopoly over physx or thier drivers?Apple have no interest of doing that (unless they get sued). By the way, the blackberry app for mac and windows support iTunes syncing. It's very easy to sync. What palm is doing is masking their device as an iPod. Should ATI mask thier video cards as geforce?RIM and amazon both have tools that interact with iTunes's library (which is an XML file, anyone can script for it)And everything on iTunes store should be drm free (aac is a standard that apple did not create as well).Home sharing limitation: blame the music/movie industry.Zune: why is it a US only product? Why is zune originals site blocking non US ips from even accessing the site? is it because ms is paying a fee to music labels for every unit?So the devil recommends organ donation ;)? Anyway the mac version of Gordon is an angry mac bastard. I'm serious, that's a podcast :pwindows 7: can I get home edition with one more language without paying the ms tax for ultimate? Don't care for other 33 languages... How about an upgrade edition that's on the honor system :) I lost my xp cd and key :) it's been 8 yearshtc made the hardware ;) Gordon should try android, it's Linux on a phone not dos :)thanks dor the episode, happy Eid!

Windows 7
Submitted by Modred189 on Sat, 09/19/2009 - 10:46am
Hey MaxPC,
I thought I would share my experience with Windows 7 on lower end hardware, as you mention an Athlon X2 being better on XP.
My wife's laptop, a 3yr+ Gateway (MX 2439??) has a Turion ML32 (single core 1.2/1.4ghz, I forget), 1.5gb of ram and a 60gb PATA HDD. Windows XP finally died on it a few weeks back, and I could not find the restore disk. I had a copy of XP pro, but I figured I would give Windows 7 a shot.
I am glad I did. Windows 7 Pro (32bit) RTM runs phenomenally, and definitely is more responsive than the old XP Home install. The installation was easy, taking around an hour or so. In addition, I only needed to track down ONE driver. The Vista sound driver worked fine.
Funny thing is that I had to install Virtual Box, as her school she teaches at uses some software that is not compatible with Vista/7.
If it can be purchased cheaply, I do not see why anyone who wanted to get away from XP for any reason should not upgrade.
And +1 for the Zune HD and the new software. Other than my Samsung Juke phone and k3, this is the first really nice media player I have ever owned, and I am very happy. MUCH better experience so far than the 28-day ownership I had of a 2nd gen nano.
