Zune HD Prices Purportedly Leaked
Posted 08/12/09 at 04:17:57 PM by Andy Salisbury

According to a recent info leak from Best Buy’s inventory system, we expect that the Zune HD will cost only $220 for the 16GB model and $290 for the 32GB model.
For those keeping tabs, this puts Microsoft at a huge advantage over Apple. Currently the iPod Touch costs $229, $299 and $399 for the 8GB, 16GB and 32GB models (respectively). Apple may or may not change prices around once the Zune HD hits store shelves, but as of right now things are looking solid up in Redmond.

While the Zune HD looks

While the Zune HD looks great, they've overlooked 1 thing
Apple released a 32gb iPhone
This means that they have access to affordable 32gb flash memory (iPhone has 1 slot, iPod touch has 2, which is why the touch has always had more memory)
This means that, by november, Apple will have 16, 32, and 64gb iPod Touches (rumored to also be included...a camera, among other things)
even if you put the availability of apps aside, the 64gb option sure to be present on the iPod touch around the time of the release of the Zune HD will cause it to be chosen over the Zune by many consumers
All I'm saying is that the decision to wait to offer a 64gb model was a mistake that may hurt their early sales, and lose them to Apple (after all, who buys an iPod touch, and then 4 months later, a Zune? especially in this economy)
Price and a little permoting

Just the price difference will make people think about Zune. I love my Zune 80, I would pick it over an Ipod hands down. Microsoft has done little to promote the Zune, I have never seen a commercial or billboard for it, maybe that will change once they get the Microsoft stores open. I'm excited for the HD and plan on getting one eventually, hopefully Microsoft will do what they did with the original zunes and keep updating their older ones with the new interface.
The HD is not going to get Apple fanboys to switch, but hopefully it will break the idea of an Ipod being the only mainstream choice.
that's true, but apple could

that's true, but apple could very well drop the price of the touch to compete with this, as they havn't even revealed the update yet. They've been taking the iPod prices down lately, and I think they'll at least bring down the highest level one to compete with this. If a 64 is $100 more, its one thing. But if it's only an extra $50, they might have trouble.
To be honest, an "apple fanboy" such as I used to be, probably will never abandon an iPod. I still tend to favor apple, but microsoft has been doing things right the last few months (windows 7 is a HUGE improvement), and yes, the Zune HD, spec wise, blows the iPod touch out of the water. It's also the only competitor to the iPod/iPhone I've seen with an interface that seems like it'll also match them. In all seriousness, the only thing keeping me with iPods at this point is the 16 gigs of iTunes music that'd be a pain to bring over to the zune. Anyone with any relatively easy way to do that, let me know
I can see it nowl; Zune

Im glad that the BEST BUY emplyees get to have their cell phones on them. Im an EasyTech for Staples and they dont allow us to carry them, but the second we get windows 7 boxes im snapping a shot lol
Best Buy does it again

This seems to be happening more and more often at Best Buy, remember they also "leaked" Windows 7 pre-sale information weeks before it was announced. Is "leaking" confidential pricing becoming their unofficial business tactic, or are they just that inept at controlling their employees?

Maybe you guys should note that these capacity sizes have not hampered the iPod or iPhone one bit. Capacity is important, but it is not the end all and be all.
Besides, MS has said that they will try and make a 64gig version for the end of the year. :D
As cool as this new device

As cool as this new device is, if it has less storage space than my 80gb Zune (which is 80% full), I don't want it. Make a Zune HD HDD with at least 160gb. Only so much 720p "HD" content can fit on 32gb.

Not that this information is not helpful, but do companies need to start taking away cell phones away from ignorant employees (*wink* Best Buy)?
32 is a little small...

how much HD content can one fit in 32GB? I know they are only useing flash for the HD, but it seems like a HDD would be better
I agree. The HD looks

I agree. The HD looks sweeeet but one of the reasons I bought my Zune 80 was the 80 gig HD! I liked having my entire music collection, plenty of videos, all my photos, and all my podcasts under one roof. It's a step in the wrong direction. Improve everything else but provide less storage.
