Cripes, there were TWO announcements. One was the GTX 690. Any comments about the OTHER announcement?

avatar

usmckozmo

It's the GTX690; Basically two 680's smashed together for 1000 bucks. I'll pass, unless someone wants to give me one for free ;)

In other news: The 3770k (Ivy Bridge) is on sale! I can finally finish my build!

Too much hype for an overpriced incremental update to an existing pair of products. Moreso, a product we all KNEW was coming eventually. Next time nVidia needs to save the super hype event for something new and exciting. If they pull this crap again I'm not listening anymore.

avatar

Danthrax66

You're fucking high. The 600 series is a major improvement and they didn't released the top of the line 680 yet and the current one outperforms the 580 by a shit ton and it uses less power and runs cooler.

avatar

Obsidian

So the promo crowbar was for our wallets? I don't know anyone of my highly paid techy friends that will EVER spend $1000 on a single graphics card, no matter how many cores it has. Can it play ALL current games on 3-screens in 3600 by 1920 resolution with all the bells and whistles turned on?

The NVIDIA gaming festival in Shanghai had hot dancers on stage in pushup bras and short skirts during this press release, and I STILL don't want to buy one of these products. Then there were 10 minutes of advertizing OR MORE in the middle of the stream for most monumental announcement for NVIDIA in 2012 ... I guess they had to pay those three dancers somehow.

I only have NVIDIA cards in every PC in my house, and this makes me want to buy their products LESS ... At this point I consider this event a huge failure for this company.

avatar

AngryDemon

For our wallets--->hahaaha thats a good one.
But seriously $1000 just for a GPU?To do what?Gaming?Cracking Nuclear Launch Code?Programming an AI?Simulating the Matrix?Remapping the DNA?
Mapping The Multiverse?Searching the 11th Demension?Calculating a Hyperspace jump?Aweakaning Cthulhu?

avatar

Obsidian

To make matters worse it turns out we were subjected to the advertizing in the middle of the stream because they were setting up the games and gamers ... you'll never guess what game they used to show off this incredible product ...

StarCraft II ... ummm, wtf?

How graphically demanding is SC2? Answer, not very. I own it, and it plays with max settings on a computer that's 3 years old at 1920x1200 resolution.

Game show off failure. Product show off fail. Event letdown in progress. Use crowbar on emergency exit now.

Apparently NVIDIA wants to sell the world a graphics card for $1000 that plays a game which is perfectly playable at the same settings on a computer that costs less than $1000. Who exactly sets up these events? Maybe there's a cultural disconnect of some sort going on here.

Nothing Blizzard makes is very high end graphic wise.

I think I get the joke on the crowbar thing. You really need a crowbar to pry open the Heatsink since its bolted down so tight you think that the heatsink is part of the gpu board.

Cripes, full write up is already online with pictures. They are good!:

avatar

Obsidian

I understand the geeky excitement, but I'd hardly call one page and a single image a full write up with pictures. More like, generalized stats with A single picture of the potential product.

avatar

JohnP

This was posted DURING the conference. I think they had the GTX 690 in the can, but the GForce Experience was new to everyone. Hence the typo.

avatar

Penterax

GTX 690, looks like a very nice piece of high-tech kit -

I gotta say, someone has very small breadboxes where they come from - or maybe has no clue what one actually is. Think "bigger than a loaf of bread". You could stack 3 GTX 690s in my breadbox (yes, I actually have one).

;)

avatar

JohnP

I think they meant the "other" surprise, the GForce experience supercomputer. That sounds at least TALLER than a breadbox...

avatar

iron1mike

such crap! you cant even buy a 680 so who cares about a 690 you cant buy? Why would they not launch a 680m? The 7970m is going to mop the floor with them.

avatar

Brad Chacos

I still (on a totally personal level, not as a freelance representative of MPC) find myself thinking along the lines I wrote up in this article:

http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/nvidia_clues_us_when_its_coming

Basically, I think releasing the GTX 670 would've made a bit more sense, but you wouldn't've created all that hype for a card that's less powerful than the GTX 680 that's already on the streets. Maybe the GTX 690 is a good sign and Nvidia/TSMC worked the kinks out of its manufacturing process? Maybe we'll be awash in GK104-based cards before we know it? That'd be spiffy.

avatar

JohnP

Brad, the lack of NVidia Kepler cards could indeed be the result of poor foundry yields (well published in February but no news lately). It could also be due to a huge demand for the cards and no one can keep them in stock. Do you have any insider information either way?

avatar

JohnP

Wait for it: GTX 690, dual Kepler GPU. Highest performance graphics card in history. Advanced thermal and acoustics engineering (his words, not mine). Over 3000 cores. 300 Watts, 10 phase power supply. For cooling, dual water vapor chambers and clear polycarbonate windows, 3,000 RPM fan (he promised that it would be quiet). Has some bling to it, the card dings and the top of card lights up with a green NVidia logo when the card is powered up.

avatar

JohnP

4GB of memory.

avatar

AngryDemon

I wonder what it had to do with the crowbar and zombies.
Or maybe Nvidia is implaying that we can make our own Half Life 3 mod using the free Crytek engine and Gforce experience while using the brand new GTX 690 as our GPU, and maybe.... add some zombies as extras.

avatar

JohnP

First surprise:
GForce Experience (PC with a console experience)
1.Supercomputer datacenter with every possible combo of drivers, settings, and hardware configurations for the PC.
2. Console user interface application on the PC desktop that connects to the cloud to pull in all the latest drivers, game updates, and the perfect settings for any PC/GPU hardware combination. Automatically sets everything up to fully optimize your game when you push the "optimize" button. (No mention of AMD GPUs being included in the database, heh)

avatar

boltron

SO what was it ?

avatar

JohnP

It's live right now (11:07PM EST) on geforce.com. The two "surprises" are going to be given last, say an hour from now.

avatar

boltron

Thanks, but i cant watch right now. I'm at work. Wish i wasn't. if you would keep me posted that would be great.
Thanks again.

avatar

Kinetic

I doubt it's a console. At least not in the traditional sense.
Think about it, we already have four platforms (counting PCs) to game on. I can't see nvidia throwing their hat into the ring in the twilight of this generation of game systems to create a barely supported fifth disk format.

What my money is on is a sort of "pc console". Something about the size of an HTPC, preconfigured specifically for gaming on modest settings at 1920x1080 resolution, possibly upgradable, at a similar price point as our current consoles. Maybe $300-$400?
Makes sense to me. The inflated price of "gaming PCs" at the local stores, along with how daunting building your own system can seem to the first-timer, keeps a lot of people away from pc gaming. A product like what I described could easily bridge that gap.

Ghost XFX

A GPU in a XXXL tin can? Are we sure it will fit in our cases?

avatar

JLloyd13

almost certinly its the 670 and/or 660 and/or 650 or (if were lucky) even a 690. isnt much else it could be

avatar

Rift2

Interesting to say the least if it's a console hell that would make the console wars intresting the Green and Black colors will sell it alone.

avatar

Penterax

Since it's "bigger than a breadbox", that makes a console, or something like one, a logical guess. I'm not sure though why everyone thinks that it has to be in conjunction with Valve.

If it IS a console, it's going to be something of a non-event for me, since what I want is a better graphics solution for my computer, not some box that likely will introduce yet another variation of programming for games that developers have to work with when they create one. I don't like consoles for that very reason - they divide up the resources available to develop a game, and then provide limitations that effect other platforms when they are no longer technologically capable (outdated).

I'm not saying a console would be a bad thing really, or that the link with Valve isn't a logical one, but for it to be more than a curiosity to me, it will really have to be something more.

I think I'd rather have Big Kepler.

;)

avatar

SmurfEater

Did anyone think that the pictures in the background could hold a clue?

avatar

jonnyohio

Well since the crowbar was sent to maximum pc and it's at maximum pc where the photo was taken I'd say someone has kids that like to draw.

> Opens article fearing Valve got some The Way You're Meant to Get Played bribe money
> Small flat crobar used to open small wooden boxes, looks nothing like The Freeman's crowbar

Oh thank God.

avatar

Humpfester

You can use that thing for opening up a can of whoopass.

"a can of whoopass"

A phrase used to indicate that the target is about to be introduced to a whole world of pain. Specifically, you, by opening this can, are going to unleash the power of whooping (that is, in the sense of attacking and beating, not in the sense of whooping cough) upon their sorry ass.

Take note, AMD.

When are they coming out with an Origin Box! :(

Screw that I'm waiting on the Blizzard box!

I love how everyone starts shouting "Steam Box" when Valve outright crushed that rumor a month ago.

Let's not forget that Half-Life isn't the only franchise with both zombies and crowbars. Seems to fit pretty well, but take everything with a grain of salt. As for me... Yeah, I think Valve may have to do with it to some degree, but I highly doubt it's Half-Life related.

Some kind of partnership between Nvidia and Valve? Could also be more details on the Big Picture.

avatar

gordonung

I have absolutely no inside information, but since it's being announced in China, my made up, pulled out of my floppy port guess: Nvidia-based console for the Chinese gaming market which has no game consoles. Steam-powered perhaps since it'll probably be x86-based.

avatar

Peanut Fox

The way publishers lament piracy in current markets, it'd be strange for them to attempt anything like this in China.

avatar

XOPN

OMG LET THE STEAMBOX GO ALREADY! Seirously you think that EVERY COMPANY have some connection with steam is going to announce the steambox? How does that make any freakin since?!

avatar

Biceps

My guess is also Steambox. But with L4D3 and HL 2, Episode 3 being announced with it. And if I am right, can I have the crowbar? I promise to use it only for its intended purpose(s).

avatar

Ulrich

Only if my prediction below is incorrect... lol I want the Crowbar... ;)

avatar

Peanut Fox

Neither of you can have it. It's a flatbar, not a crowbar. Clearly I should be the one to wield it's power.

avatar

Valor958

Steambox with public announcement for Half Life 3 / Ep 3.

They claim they weren't interested in getting into the console market, but who really knows. They could market their product as a gaming centric PC and slide into the boutique PC market. Personally, I think it would be a bad business move, but we'll see soon won't we.

avatar

Ulrich

Includes Left 4 Dead 3 with console purchase.

avatar

Ulrich

They are partnering with Steam to make the Steambox console. Neither Sony or MS are using Nvidia GPU's in their new rigs. This would be a reason why.
