You May Notice a Slight Tingling Sensation...
Posted 07/15/09 at 04:48:13 PM by Will Smith
By now, if your browser's cache has refreshed, you've already noticed that we've put a fresh coat of paint on MaximumPC.com today. If you're still seeing a lot of orange, press Shift+F5 or clear your cache and reload the page.
Back? Good. We haven't added a ton of new functionality with today's release--we've given our current design a little more breathing room, worked to improve page load times, and laid the groundwork that will let us add new features and functionality in the coming months. That doesn't mean that today's release will be bug-free, if you find problems with the site, things don't look right, or you just want to let us know how we did, please let us know in this post's comment thread.
As always, this new look is all thanks to hard behind-the-scenes work of the MaximumPC.com team--Bart, Chris, Drew, Kitt, Mark, and Michael. Thanks guys, the site looks great!

I miss the "My Comments"

I miss the "My Comments" section the most. I either have to go directly to my profile or try to remember which articles I posted on, none of which are convenient.
Suggestions
Submitted by da_samman on Sun, 07/26/2009 - 9:47am
You may want to tone down the red to s softer grey, it does tend to hurt the eyes. Also, It looks like all but the first of the articles get pushed down below the right column on IE 6 (Yea, I know it isn't Firefox, but it's the only browser on the machines I have access to now. I'll be sure to thor oughly wash my hands when I can return to Firefox.) You may want to look into it. Thanks.

Only thing that bugs me is
Submitted by three6mafia1665 on Sun, 07/26/2009 - 9:59am
Only thing that bugs me is the side bar grid of grey and black. Scrolling on my 25ms LCD creates a 'flashing' ghosting effect that is very unpleasant. The orange was nice IMO, but can't please all.
I like another users tip on here: Selectible color schemes for those of us with user accounts. Even if this only started as a gallery of the old styles, it will avoid the ZOMG WHERES MY PRETTY STYLE, IM LEAVING sort of response.
Resource Center
Submitted by three6mafia1665 on Sun, 07/26/2009 - 10:04am
I'd also have to agree that the resource center is completly misleading. If each link was actually a seperate ad, with useful info it would be much more acceptable. But in its current form, it's decieving and all 4 links (5 if u include the header lol) are to the same ad.
Giving me ads is fine, in fact I enjoy a few of them. Misleading me into thinking it's MPC content is where its frustrating.

White and red constrast too
Submitted by AntiHero on Sat, 07/18/2009 - 10:47am
White and red constrast too heavily. My eyes are a little wary from reading this site, I don't browse it as much as I used to now. Sorry guys, it was a valiant effort. Might i suggest keeping this new form of everything but going to a lighter tone? maybe even returning to the old orange/white/black color scheme we all know and love? Aside from the red, I like the form. It loads faster and is very clean and tidy. Also, the old colors made the MaximumPC logo stand out a little more.
I don't like Microsoft, I associate with it.

When i logged on using norton 360 autofill, it filled in the form to login but I could still see insert username and password in the background of what i typed, I hate the images on the sides every time i switch to a different window i come back and find i cant scroll, so like all other web pages i click on the blank space, and boom up pops a new windows with ads in it. if you could make it just an image and not a link that would be great. oh and wtf happened to the post buttoN?
oh found it kinda blended in with ad.
I like change
Submitted by the_river on Fri, 07/17/2009 - 11:48am
Looks pretty good. Granted it is a sudden brilliance of white, but I think the red on white and black text is more readable. The page does load faster which is a plus.
I like it. Good job!
Fatigue
Submitted by B.A.Frayd on Fri, 07/17/2009 - 11:24am
The new look is hard on the eyes. It is hard to want to read anything with the brightness. Red text on white is not a good choice for the links - I find it repulsive. Also the layout is cluttered.
I prefered the last iteration. It was much easier on the eyes and the layout was simple and effective.
I really like the now look
Submitted by Tunnel_Vision on Fri, 07/17/2009 - 10:48am
I really like the now look of the site. The text is definetely more readable and I like the red...after all, the MaxPC logo is red! But I think the site needs to be wider. It kind of feels cramped with the articles and the columns smushed into the thin site.

I agree with the nay-sayers. Bright red on stark white is, for me, very fatiguing to read, and I find myself not wanting to spend much time exploring the site as a result. I actually was very fond of the orange scheme and never had any problems with page download time.

Sorry about double post, but your site seems to be freaking out. It seems that you've recoded your site to not function properly if AdBlock is enabled. Very cheap. Very lame.
I don't know who's in charge at MaxPC.com anymore but I really liked the last 3 or 4 layouts this site had (before this one) and I've liked the functionality of the site (with AdBlock on) until now. It's just sad what you've done with yourselves and with the site. That is all.

As a general rule, I take complaints very seriously. But, since ads are the only way we make money on the site, and you're complaining that your ad blocker doesn't work properly, I'm not that worried about your feedback.
Will, I can't speak for
Submitted by three6mafia1665 on Sun, 07/26/2009 - 10:13am
Will, I can't speak for other users, but I'm pretty sure MPC lead me to adblock plus. Now I know the site needs to be funded in some way, but you can't be upset that we're using the tools you suggested. Perhaps we can have the best of both worlds. A free site for the general public complete with ads and a 'ad free' premium service as part of the MPC subscription? Hell I'd even pay an extra 10 or 20 a year for that ontop of the mag price especially if I could get digital copies of the mag on release day. Us college students don't have perm. addresses and we often have them sent to our parents homes. Unfortunatly, this leaves me reading one to three month old mags often.
It never amazes me what aholes people can be on the internet. It's one thing to express opinion, it's another to cry about things you don't finanically support.
Misunderstanding

He's not mad the ad-blocker isn't working, he's mad that the site looks bad without them. I think the sire overall looks bad with or without the ads.
For a site about computers I would expect a more maximum layout.
Top 5
Submitted by marudd2002 on Fri, 07/17/2009 - 9:00am
1. Site is just too offensively bright now.
2. I've always used AdBlock on MaxPC's site and the site has always loaded quickly and scrolled smoothly.
3. I refuse to disable AdBlock before and after MaxPC's site update because it's just too noisy and performs (load/scroll/etc) horribly (yes even after update). Also, on top of poor performance and loudness, if I were to disable AdBlock then I'd have to be staring at some retarded ad background.
4. Site is very 1999 looking. Just horrible.
5. I'll have to find another tech site (thousands of choices) to get news and blogs from as I just can't look at this any longer.

I give this new design a 6
Submitted by knexkid on Thu, 07/16/2009 - 6:26pm
It is meh. I don't really mind it, but I think I prefer the old one a little bit better. What I don't like about it is it seems almost incomplete. When I first saw it I thought there was an issue in loading the graphics. Things just don't seem connected and flowing. It's funky which I like, but pieces of the page don't fit together well.
Also a comment to the people complaining about the ads and that clicking on them bring you to another page....duh! That's what an ad is supposed to do!! You click on it and it brings you to their website! Ads help keep this site kicking ass and free, and I don't seem them anyway because I use adblock AND YOU SHOULD TOO!
I LOVE the dark background

I think MAXIMUMPC is Great!!!
Altho the new look isn't bad, I definately think the articles or at least the sidebars for Reviews, howtos, etc. would look much better and be much easier to read if they were a different background color just like before.
[ White=BAD! Color=GOOD! eh, Igor?] And why RED of all colors?!!
Why not make the the Web page so it would be customizable for yourself if you log on, change it and then save it? If not, put it back so we can read it! If It aint broke-why fix it?

MPC - Generic
Submitted by LovTrain on Thu, 07/16/2009 - 12:37pm
I must say I like the new layout of the "Best of the Best", but the reset of the site seems to be to generic, makes me feel like I’m ready a NEWS website and not MPC, also the "Most Popular Articles" box appears to have an alignment problem.
The MPC site now appears more generic and does not have that unique feel as it did with the old colors.
I understand that change is good but keep the same colors and keep the new layout, as for me I would rather see the black and orange vs. the red and white.
The website does have too much "white" and not enough color to give it that unique feel.
I thought mximumpc was hacked!

Submitted by TheGaffer on Thu, 07/16/2009 - 10:19am
OH, I hated the orange and black. But this is rediculous. The bright red and the white glare surrounded by the black is an eye killer. I've seen many, many web sites that can get the colors right. Surly you can too. That's my major suggestion..... get decent colors. Otherwise the change is nice.
Please, please change the colors. In the meantime I'll try to tone the colors down using my browser.

Submitted by tehR0XX0Rz on Thu, 07/16/2009 - 9:18am
Reinstalling FireFox, I deleted every personal setting, which briefly allowed me to see the graphics on either side of the center frame. However, once my NoScript plugin was reinstalled, I'm back to black bars. The new web design is ugly enough, but the black bars push it over the edge and into the "a complete moron designed this page" realm of bad design.
Thing is, I can't figure out what trick you used for the graphics in the two side frames. Even if I "Temporarily allow all this page,"I have the black bars.

While I won't be a jerk about it like so many other commenters here, I have to admit I liked the old design better. I think it's the bright red against the white background. It's just too severe to look at.

Hello everyone. I am glad that you guys at MPC are always doing your best to make improvements for us the readers.
Today, when I awoke and started surfing the net, I came too this site and could not figure out what was going on. My eyes had a hard time ajusting to the glair of the new web page. I am not sure if its the contrast in colors or if the pages looks brighter. I am using a Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070SB CRT. Maybe its just me getting old or going blind. LOL Maybe its like the little boy whos mother use to tell him not too masterbate because he would go blind. One day his mom when to his room and caught him playing with himself. He said, " I won't go blind. I am just working up to Glasses"
It's not the end of the world
Submitted by Vagabond on Thu, 07/16/2009 - 7:25am
I'm tired of reading these outrageous comments of hatred towards the re-design. IT'S NOT THE END OF THE WORLD. Will said he'll (essentially) take suggestions from the readers, that doesn't justify insulting comments along the lines of "Looks like crap. Try harder." They'll work things out in the mean time. ONLY if you provide constructive criticism.
Since I'm actually trying to help, unlike some others here, I'm going to post my thoughts:
- Increase font size for author/date posting, perhaps only one or two px bigger.
- Most Popular Articles box needs to have the comment boxes aligned all to the left. I know how weirdly truncation work, so it may be difficult in some cases.
- Background needs a color change. White does look nice... but it does feel an element to the design is missing. I think retaining an orangish color would look neat. I suggest the hex code #FF8000.
- Swapping "This Month's Issue" with the top right box ad. Yes, I know the whole case with ads and crap, but I feel it'll be best to showcase your magazine first thing.
That's all for now, I'll post any more suggestions when I think of them.

Not as bad as most of these comments indicate
Submitted by NAYRhyno on Thu, 07/16/2009 - 7:12am
I like the new colors, but it seems like the alignment on a few things are off. For example, in the most popular articles box (and the Bio page, as murph said). Also, having the entire background be an ad is a little annoying. When i switch windows, and a browser is in the background, i often click the sites background to bring the whole window back to the forground.
Finally, I agree that the backgrounds are too white now. It was easier to seperate out content visually with more than just one background color for every section.
EDIT: I also dont like the show-stopping ads that come up after posting a comment. LAME.

The reviews are much better, I have issues with seeing breaks in rows, so it's great with the huge color difference. Thank you.

Crap, crap, crap. I don't like it. The only thing betther than before is the load times. It will take time to get used to this new look, but realize that it is a step backwards in look and feel. The orange theme was better, for many reasons. Right now, there is too much white space. The old theme had backgrounds that seperated different areas out. You replaced that all with white. No way. This is crap crap crap. Try again guys. I don't mind red and black, but add some more backgrounds so it doesn't feel like a 12 year old kid designed the website.
Besides that, Maximum PC is the best. Gordon and Will, especially, really rock.

I really liked the Orange background it gave the site a bold and modern look and feel. I do not like the very plain black background, it almost looks amateur-ish. My vote is for the return of the orange Background. Also I do not like how the various red link boxes seem to just be floating on the screeen attached to nothing.Would prefer if the links seem like they were inside the catagory boxes, while I am at it, I do not like the red/white combination for those boxes either. Sorry to be a downer, I just like it the way it was before.

Submitted by Muerte on Thu, 07/16/2009 - 5:34am
Okay, I like a little change every now and again but the white background isn't quite right. I have to agree with the unfinished comment. The white just looks unfinished. I liked the orange but even off white like the border of the comment text box would be better.
I want the list of articles that I made comments in back on the side bar. I don't really care about which articles are most viewed, so if you have to get rid of a box, that's the one I'd choose. Or give me a choice of what I can put on the side bar.

Submitted by mesiah on Thu, 07/16/2009 - 2:40am
All I can say is, wow. I've never seen a simple web redesign offend so many people :D While I don't absolutely hate it like some people I don't like the fact that the articles I have commented section has been removed (I know I can see them under my profile but its not as simple) And although I don't mind the prince of persion advertisment on the main page, making the entire left side a click add is very annoying. I keep alot of windows open and tend to click on any open space to bring what I want to see to the front. Because of this I tend to click the add by accident because it looks like blank space. I don't mind the colors, and there are definately spacing issues which I am sure will be worked out in time. I'm sure you guys put some solid effort into this, unfortunately I dont think it deserves as much hate as it got, but it definately needs some tweaking.
