World Cup Frenzy Grips the Internet
The FIFA World Cup kicked off today in Johannesburg, South Africa. Soccer's showcase event always puts viewership records in grave danger with its ability to elicit unprecedented frenzy. On the inaugural day of the tournament, news sites turned out to be the main beneficiaries of the fan fervor. According to content delivery firm Akamai, news sites around the world experienced vastly heightened activity on Friday as viewers flocked to them in record numbers.
Its Net Usage Index, which continuously monitors global news consumption, showed a steep climb in traffic around noon, when traffic peaked at nearly 12.1 million visitors per minute. Akamai has never before recorded such levels. The previous record of around 8.5 million vpm was set when Barack Obama won the presidential race.

I think the title should be "World Cup Frenzy Grips the Internet Except in America". Actually, I'm not American and I still don't care for it much.

Both coments are so stupid that do not derve a real reply. Let me just tell you that if you do not know anything about something, that seems to be case here, some times is better to close your mouth and hide your pen and direct your brain activity to something you like and understand. I enjoy soccer, I enjoy baseball (that a lot of people finds it boring, I do not), and NFL football, I have never watched a rugby match so I can not say anything about it.
Guys you dont like soccer, who cares about it...

Well glad your a fan of football. I played it in school for 3 years so maybe I'm not a professional but I have a rather good knowledge of it so I feel that I can speak my opinion on this topic. You might not assume just because of a dislike that ignorance is the cause. I did not say it was gay as stated below. I said I found it boaring, just like watching golf (love playing), tennis, or poker that seems to always be on ESPN. I am a baseball fan (go Rangers). Their are actually very few sports that I have not tried and I'll state it again I am not a fan of Football or Soccer as you have to call it.
Also look into Rugby if you like American football you will like Rugby. Great sport.

You have a point. I agree with you soccer can be boring in TV or a stadium but anyone can
argue the same for other us national sports (baseball for instance...).
Like you, I played soccer, football and baseball and I enjoy watching a
good game or play with my friends.I think I support the notion that "World Cup Fenzy Grips the Internet...except in the US". The reason for this is quite obvious, soccer has not able to gain fans, players, even though the US women and men teams are regularly good. I notice this since the world cup in Korea, US team beat Mexico and advanced to quarterfinals. I asked my friends if they knew about it and only 10% did. Try for your self, ask the score of yesterdays US-England match.
I think is a cultural thing, soccer is not a US kind of sport yet. There is big hype for national teams in this world-class event in any country...but the US (compare it with the hype that even high-school teams have for other sports). The soccer world cup is a tournament with the 32 best national teams of all the world (including the US in this one). The champion will be a real world class champion. It is for this reason that I can understand the frenzy that the Soccer World Cup generates everywhere...but the US.

I understand your point of view and I agree with you. Although I do not have a passion for the sport I do follow the world cup because I always like to see the US come out on top. (not that I dislike any other country). Oh and congratulations to all the Germany fans out there.

Maybe I don't get it but I really do not understand the frenzy over football. I find it so boring. Give me Rugby and American Football all day everyday.
