So now Computer Noobs & Smart Phone Jockeys are referring to PC software as "APPS" because that the TRENDY WORD to use.

Windows 8, Truly made for Noobs, Kids & Mac Users.

whr4usa

ya know in the very early 90s they used to be called apps too

Oh look, Maximum PC hating on Windows 8 for no reason....

They are pointing out legitimate concerns that any new platform these days has. It applies to mobile as well. Often people choose a phone or tablet because of the apps, not the hardware. So to act like MaximumPC is hating on Windows 8 just because they are pointing out that Windows has yet to catch up with other players' app markets is nothing short of unfair whinging (and no I did not spell that word wrong. Look it up if you're not familiar with it).

The best app I've used so far is the ESPN app. It just makes a lot of sense. The notifications are rich, you can sign into your ESPN account. And it has a nice Live Tile.

Other than that, Accuweather is all I use.

Facebook Pro? Seriously?

The best FB app is IE10. Why do you need anything else?

avatar

PCWolf

Because IE sucks, no matter what version it is.

whr4usa

IE doesn't suck - your technical evaluation of browsers does

It kinda boggles my mind that you are so bloody persistent in your spamming. Don't you know that you're not achieving anything? Is someone paying you and it is them who is stupid and not you? I have no idea. All I know is that your efforts are not going to get anyone to go to that site.

avatar

PCWolf

Shame there is no REPORT option to flag this spammer.

Only using the RC version I never got a chance to see the app store. It's bad. In a lot of ways it reminds me of how Microsoft handles downloadable content for the Xbox platform. They really need to do something about BOTH of them.

They have to find a way to mitigate the amount of information a user see, keep it relevant, and elegant enough so that it's enjoyable. Because there is no way someone put this together, put it on a 20+ inch screen and said it looks good. They can't have.

It's a bit of a reverse from the "search overload" commercials they launched when Bing was a new thing.

whr4usa

try the final code with all of the updates and an open mind

My mind is open, but even as it stands I don't have anything personal to gain from spending 40 dollars to upgrade from an OS that already does everything I want. Even at 15 bucks I'm still weighing the headache of doing an install.

Unless there's a huge improvement in my rendering time going from 7 to 8 there is nothing I'll personally gain.

EDIT: When I say it's bad, I'm exclusively referring to the app store. Windows 8 on the whole is okay. Not good, not bad, great. Just okay. Which is poor considering it's Microsoft, and I not only expect them to do better, I know they can.

avatar

whr4usa

fair enough... so then don't use the app store (though you'll be missing out on the newegg app!)

there would be a rendering improvement
...how big it will be dpeends on your games, your hardware and your definition of huge and if your system is properly configured or not...

buy the license now, then if you choose to not use it or don't find any need for it sell it later, after the promotional period has ended!

^ +1. I am at the same point myself. After playing around with it and learning some things it has it's okay, but not ground-breaking enough to get me to upgrade.

There is no rhyme or reason to the Win8 App store. It is the most disorganized and hastily thrown together website in existence.

The most egregious app is the broken email app that constantly kicks you out to the desktop.

Nice going MS....Win8 should be renamed Vista II.

avatar

whr4usa

you obviously havn't used the updated mail app or tried a third-party mail app or even used the final release of windows 8 or the windows store

vista 2? that's a compliment, considering everything most people mention first as loving in 7 was introduced and mostly-unchanged from vista

avatar

Happy

And YOU are obviously a Microsoft shill.

Congratulations, you are more obvious than a troll.

FAIL!

avatar

whr4usa

obvious is the point of objective technical analysis

I don't shun an entire productline simply because of things that can be customized or configured by the user or that are necessary to improve the performance, security and serviceability of the codebase

I hold a single Msft cert. and only use IE 64-bit 30% of the time (not counting configuring customers' systems of course... field experience helps keep some perspective others often lack in these debates) and I LOVE CentOS
(I hated Windows clients before Vista, just didn't know enough and gamed too much to switch; avoided Server like the plague until 2012 in favor of CentOS and Suse family or FreeBSD though I've received training on 2000 and 32-bit 2008)

I just find it hilarious how people keep accussing me of trolling for exposing their baseless anti-Microsoft hatred and ignoring real innovation because of personal preference and routines

...and Happy, you're the last person I expected to post something like this as a reply to me ...you general have useful input on thee boards and most of the time I'm either agreeing with you or correcting a factual error and nothingmore, oh well
