Do PC sales take into account how upgradable PC's are these days? I know I've seen more of the people I know upgrading components from cpus to ram to gpus, whereas before they would've just bought a new pc.

...and no they don't, nor do most consumers when purchasing sadly.

I am building a new PC right now & I tried to buy Windows 8 yesterday from microsoft.com and they don't sell a full install, only an upgrade version. The only full versions I've found at the usual sellers are OEM versions as well.

If Microsoft expects us to install windows 7 & then upgrade to 8 on a new installation, they should be flogged until Windows 9 ships.

Seriously, who ever made this decision needs to be fired. I was tentative about wanting to install 8 in the first place. Now I know for a fact I never will.

where have you been..?

the "System Builder" licensing edition (still mislabeled by NewEgg and others as 'OEM') *IS* the 'replacement' for vista++7's "retail-licensed' FPP"

...the only thing *lost* is license 'transferability' but it costs much less and there's no need to trck licensing anymore, so whom cares?

The biggest factor is THE ECONOMY SUCKS.

I think lost in all the statistics is the most important one - there were 89.8 MILLION PC shipments. In one quarter. Yeah, it's less than previous years, but to look at those 90 million shipments and construe that as a "death of the PC" argument is ridiculous.

And I also would like to see the stats on hardware shipments. nVidia and Radeon are still churning out video cards like nobody's business. SOMEONE is buying those...

All this talk of PC shipments makes me wonder how the hardware shipments compare? I am wondering, has computer hardware sales declined ? I can't remember the last time i bought a PC.

Ditto. I built my last 10 PC's when I discovered I could build them for half the cost of new. What percentage of users build their own, and how do components compare to new PC sales?
