Wii Sales Way Down in December, Xbox 360 Shoots Up
According to Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter's numbers, Nintendo moved around 2.6 million Wii consoles in December, edging ahead of Microsoft's Xbox 360 with 2.5 million units and way ahead of Sony's PlayStation 3 (1.2 million units), CNet reports.
Good for Nintendo, right? Not so fast. If those numbers are accurate, it means Nintendo Wii sales declined 32 percent compared to December 2009. PS3 sales also dropped (to the tune of 12 percent year-over-year), while the Xbox 360 exhibited a healthy 91 percent growth rate compared to one year prior.
There's more bad numbers for Nintendo. For the six month period ended September 2010, Nintendo posted a $24.6 million loss, the result of weak Wii and DS console sales. Going forward, Nintendo hopes to gain some ground with its upcoming 3DS handheld console, but with no living room consoles on the horizon, it will be interesting to see if Wii sales continue to decline or have simply leveled out.

I currently own a Wii and actually use it frequently. It's a really good console and is really easy to mod. (The console itself not the effing games.) I have my Wii hooked up to my old-ish CRT TV in my room along with my PC hooked up to my 1080P TV in my living room. I am a hardcore gamer most of the time, so when I want to play real games, I use my PC. It does really piss me off that developers are too stupid to make games for PC. I understand the piracy problems, especially since it is the worst on the PC but it really isn't fair that some of the good games (Say... Gran Turismo Series?) are only for the console. I am really into racing games and all of this is total bull.

Do NOT buy Nintendo Wii console. After my Wii broke down twice in 4 yrs, first time was after warranty expired so I had to pay. Second time, new issue but I was not going to pay. So bought a new one (only because I have young children who use it). After buying, I am told that my Rockband songs that I bought cannot be transferred as they are locked to the console. So Nintendo is telling me I am SOL. This is BS. Their machines are crap (always have issues with the laser) and now buying a new one makes you lose all downloaded content including some games (like Mario Kart where my kids unlocked every character & now lost them). Never again will I buy Nintendo. The content should be tied to an account not a console. Trying to protect content punishes legit users. However when I get screwed over, that is when I support piracy.

If you have a 1 to 2 GB camera SD card you can Softmod your wii and be able to backup all of your saves and there is even ways to transfer some of your Downloadable Content to another Wii.

and because of the unreadable disc problem caused by the november kinect update, it caused some uninformed users to think their xbox 360 is broken and go out and buy replacement new xbox 360 consoles. this surely has accounted for part of microsoft's xbox 360 numbers sold in december 2010. coincidence or conspiracy?

The Kinect update from Xbox Live on November 1, 2010 caused a large number of Xbox 360s to stop reading discs. Microsoft still hasn't addressed the issue.

I spend most of my time PC gaming now as well. It is superior to my 360 in every way and i haven't played my 360 since my subscription ran out months ago. I don't want to pay $60 a year to play modern warfare 2, and Black Ops was a huge fail for me (cheesey JFK and Regan impersonations? No thanks).
The graphics are better, I can choose to use either a 360 controller or a keyboard / mouse and i have much more control (modding, etc). Even some crappy console ports like Borderlands can be modded to perfection (was messing around last night ajusting the FOV and adding 3rd person view, DX10 support and Phys-X / anti-aliasing, as well as a click to a click to aim option instead of holding down the right mouse button constantly).
It is true that a lot of developers are ignoring or blatantly insulting the PC platform right now with the crappiness of these ports but the fact remains there is still fairly strong modding community out there (moddb.com) and group of techies who are willing not just to mod but find tweaks as well (most of the aforementioned Borderlands 'mods' aren't mods at all, but just tweaks in the INF files).

I'm pretty much done with consoles. After buying them all from the past 3 generations I find myself PC gaming 98% of the time. I bought them but rarely play them. The games are boring and I can't stand a gamepad. Its not comfortable holding one (my hands usually cramp up) after performing awkward button/trigger/analog stick actions for games that have been shoehorned onto the platform.

Where are all these going? They have been out for 5 years now and they are still selling 2.5 million a month? Wii was huge for so long it seems like they're running out of people to sell them to. How are they losing money on a product that paid for itself a long time ago?

The Wii attracted a lot of families and people outside the box to play it's games. But that fascination is over now. People who routinely invest in games and gaming peripherals are traditional, hard-core gamers and the Wii doesn't fall into that category.
Then you have the release of the Kinect which sold unholy amounts of units boosting the XBox popularity.
But all these console boneheads should give up the ghost and switch to PC gaming. These consoles are showing their age now and holding developers back from developing state-of-the-art games. ;-)
